is the use of cattle prod becoming more acceptable in ipo bark and hold training

Personally, I hope not. E collars are one thing ( I have used one on occasion), but cattle prods are a very different game.  They are much more painful to the animal and can leave some nasty scars.

IMO. Cattle prods cross the line into animal cruelty.

It's abusive crap like this that made me hesitate so long before getting involved in schutzhund/IPO!  Angry Smile

What possible justification could there be for using a cattle prod on a DOG?? Sad Smile

by beetree on 02 April 2014 - 13:04

I think this post idea is BS, to be honest. Any real "dog man" would know that.

Too late for April Fool's Day, bee!  Sad Smile   I think he's serious, and given some of the stuff I've heard about the abuse* of shock collars in the sport, I'm not all that surprised! Angry Smile

*(emphasis on ABUSE. I don't deny that shock collars have a LEGITIMATE use, especially now that most come with a 'paging' feature.)

Could you share where you found this particular "gem" or how you dreamt it up?

This is one time I wouldn't mind giving PETA a call, and telling them to stake out the training field... Teeth Smile Devil Smile

People capable of doing stuff like this give the whole sport a black eye, and will eventually cause it to be banned!

Well, I've told my "cattle prod" story on here, at least two times, already. The results when used on rams was uplifting, to say the least.

I've seen it done, it's not April Fools. No, I personally would never use it on my dog.  The dog should have good active aggression and the helper should know how to provoke it without a cattle prod. I will say though that I've seen people use e-collars and even simple choke collars in ways that I personally found more excessive than the cattle prod (which from what I saw was not being used to correct a dog or keep him clean).  Anytime someone starts going off on their dog out of anger and frustration I do not think is appropriate regardles of the tool being used.

VKGSD:  I agree with the anger when training but I know some well trained gsd and these are very high drive dogs trained by Breeders of pup, and when a dog reaches a certain point, and we are talking about the Frei Gugge, type gsd, working lines, then I have seen the cattle prod used.  IT is by very well handled trainers and they do know what they are doing...Lots of training tools used by trainers of these high drive, highly agressive gsd, with good nerves but very very stubborn headed and need appropriate cleaning dogs, is not used by the general public nor people who are not familiar with these types of gsd.  IT has nothing to do with anger. IT is not discussed among the public because the ASSUMPTION  is cruelity to animals.. This tool is not used often but is used by the trainer who in his hands is responsible and has a dog that is able to be gently prodded. THE cattle prod is nothing more than a spark , like the E collar...SO do not think it is Execution style training...It sounds bad but in the right place it has and is used..Lot of things done for training HIGH aggression dogs in many venues , are not discussed or used by the average dog trainer or owner of any dog...Rotties and Bull mastiffs trained for shepherding or guarding are other agressive personality dogs..

I know wrong people get the wrong tools in their hands because someone told them it is used but we all know we cannot change the world nor minds of the WANNA BE trainer..I have heard some horrid tales of use of E Collar and other methods believe me...but none of us condone that.

A lot of people get on the  Ban table training wagon also as they have seen the wrong use of it...nor do they understand why it is used , and unless you see the proper use of it in play , and witness it used, one should not pass judgement on that type of training either...THERE is a time and place for all kinds of tools if  used by the right person who is reputable and accountable...SO many people are not and do use the tools inappropriately.
