Blitzen:  Friendship to me is honesty.  You are the one that started this and alway directed to GSDNewbie.  It is a never ending story between the 2 of you.  Helen considers me a friend after all the bad mouthing you could possibly muster to persuade her against this?  I do believe that she may be turning a corner and see into all the deception you bring to the table with your own prejudices and dislikes.  You remind me too much of Louise.  Helen is a survivor and she is what she is and will always be what she is.  She is someone I know, respect, and I consider to be an acquaintance.  She is not my friend other than on facebook.

There are so many other people that told me to pack the service vest on and take him to wherever or admitted that they took the vest on the dog to fly to a stud or repro vet. It is done.  I think this transgressance is far more serious than getting a dog into a hotel room for a night or into a restaurant.  It is about money and saving the cost to ship the dog.  That is the simple and pure difference.

Wow, this has been better than I thought.
As far as my boss, I do not know what his need will be down the road. He has limited mobility right now, despite getting in his car and driving off.
THAT was one of my main concerns. It is obvious from his appearznce that he has disabilities. First and foremost, I wznt him to have a dog that will protect him and warn of any impending dangers.
He does not have the same mental sharpness as he had in the past. I do not know what other senses will be dulled or deleted as his illness progresses.
I am hoping the pup will adapt and also learn and grow as we go.
The wife and family are all very open and thankful for the thought of a service dog. We will see how the resident St. Bernard accepts the new girl. She, however is more the wifes dog, and happy to be the lazy couch potato.
The pup is going to be an in the house, go everywhere dog.
I am hoping to get her, like I said, bomb proof. I want her to become his constant companion.
Maybe learn to alert if a brain oriented issue is coming. Many dogs can tKe this upon themselves anyway.
she will definately get certified CGC, I might even sign 'us' up for a ouppy class.
What is acceptable to me, I know is not what will be acceptable here in this situation.
I mean, I am praying to God, that the medical situation does not get worse, but, realisticly.....
He has brain and lung cancer...stage 4..but halted by kemo and radiation.
I love these people, and I love my dogs.
I am hoping for a win-win situation for everyone.
He is a pig and cow farmer. They run a produce stand, I mean huge business..greenhouses, gardens, etc.,
People pass thru by the hundreds. I am hoping to place a dog, safely by his side.hopefully, she will let him feel not quite as helpless as he does.
I am certain that is why he goes off alone for these auctions.
A GOOD DOG WILL GO ALONG WAY IN MAKING HIM MORE SELF SUFFICIENT.
thank you everyone.
I GREATLY appreciate the input

Be very careful stating it is for protection. This is not a task they are allowed.

I am actually going to start two of them. We will see whois more receptive to him, and the entire situation. I myself am liking the bigger girl for this.

I am wondering, will the slight coat be a detriment?I

The coat can be difficult, the dogs must be bathed regualrly and groomed to perfection before each outing to keep them clean for people with allergies and saticfy the ADA demands on us as service dog handlers.

NO, I am NOT doung ANY protection training...that is something I have always felt the dog knows naturally.

Just a shepherd at his side I am hoping will be a deterrent to anyone.

On the contrary, I have been attacked twice because there was a gsd beside me in public.... one of those times two young males one daring the other hey go do something to her I dare you, she has a german shepherd with her bet you cant..... He cut my hair with a carpet knife. A service dog is not allowed to physically protect, so I did not let him as long as did not fear for my life or dog and I would have been crucified. I do schutzhund with him, but he is a true utility dog and knows while on service duty he is not allowed to protect or even scan for security issues. I personally feel very few dogs can turn that off and if he had been unable to I would not do both. Other things have happened like the man that followed my kids and I for over an hour through a mall barking at us, not what I would consider dangerous or an attack just anoying as hell...... there are many idiots in public that think they have a right to mess with you while you have a service dog.

The other girl who is my second choice is standard coat, she's a little more, shall we say, rambunctious than the coated girl.

I really was not thinking about the difference.Which ever dog gets chosen, exercise is not an issue. She will be living in the country and on a farm.

I think I will just go with the standard coat.

I hope we don t run into problems due to others that cheat. This dog is goung to be legit, and hopefully perform a much needed service.

Like I said, tomorrows need, will be much greater than todays. I am cohnting on lits of 'natural instincts' here to come out.

No biting behavior will be promoted, I need a real service dog

OOOH they are both so beautiful;  work with both as there is nothing about their present training needs for either that would be detrimental to a service dogs training.  All basics are the place to start, and if either excells in natural retrieving that could be very helpful also.  Let them decide their future;  they will let you know which will do the better job.  Other than the heat if she is going to be a true long coat there would be no difference except grooming.  I have used sammies for years for service and god only knows they have plenty of coat.  The grooming is a pita.  And once you spay/neuter, coats are definitely more of a pita.

Good luck Kitkat.  Please keep us updated and  I will PM you with my contact info in the event you need any help or have any questions.  Nan
