Hi.  I am new to this site and forum and hope I am posting in the correct place.  If not, please redirect me to the correct forum, thank you.

Anyway. We were told our dog, Kodiak (first picture), was a full bred GSD.  We got him at 13 weeks from someone who had two GSDs who "accidentally" bred.  They had given away/sold the other puppies and were keeping "Kodiak" for themselves until they realized 3 GSDs were too much.  I met both his parents and I know the Mom was a GSD and the dad looked like one also but a bit washed out in color (two photos above).  My dog is a big boy at 125 lbs. and has all the GSD traits (very protective, smart, loyal, etc.), however, after looking at pictures of Beglian Malinios I am second guessing his breed.   He has aggression "issues" that we are constantly working with but all in all he is a wonderful dog and I wouldn't trade him for the world.  Above are pictures of Kodiak and his parents.  What do you think?  No negative comments please.

Thanks.

He's not a pure bred anything.  Def has shepherd in him, poss malinois but that doesn't acct for his size.  Malinois are nowhere near that big and I would expect a cross with a GSD to be that big even accounting for hybrid vigor.  I have seen some GSD/ Malamute crosses that looked similar but they normally have a lighter eye than what he looks like in the pics.

My first German Shepherd weighed 126 lbs, he was purebred and AKC registered. His father was a German import Sch 3, his dam an American showline. IMO your dog could very well be a purebred German Shepherd. The important thing is not his pedigree, it's that he is a good companion dog. I think he's a very nice looking dog. Enjoy him and keep working on his aggression issues.

I met a huge 120 lb. male GSD at the vet's the other night. Parents were German imports, dog was definitely purebred.

His colour is faded/washed out sable. Although it's not a very common colour pattern for a GSD, it does happen. His dad is a very similar colour, so it's obvous where the genes came from.

His structure definitely looks pure GSD to me. Both parents have too much angulation and depth in the rear to be mixed with malinois.

Kodiaks Mom, if you have a pedigree it might be fun to add it to the database and see if we can locate images of any ancestors. I've seen pure bred German Shepherd dogs like this plenty of times, but I've also seen thousands. In the past many GSDs had this paler sable color. Over time the dogs have become redder and darker in general through selection. You can still see this color, but it is not what is bred towards. That being said, your dog could still be part malinois his back legs looks more malinois to me, It can get hard to tell also with breeds that are very similar looking. The dogs in the pictures look happy.

LOL.  German import at 120 lbs? Dog is 50% overweight then.

by Blitzen on 17 July 2014 - 22:07

Not sure which dog  you are referring to, but my dog was not overweight. He was weighed by the oncologist before and after his chemo for lymphosarcoma - 126 before, 116 after the last treatment.

he wasn't an import.  In over 20 years I have never seen an actual import that was 100+ lbs.  Seen alot that were claimed to be and their either not an import or not 120.  Again, it's against the breed standard.

The OP didn't ask if her dog was a great example of the breed, bzcz. She asked if he appeared purebred.

To the OP, I believe you were told the truth. He is a large, likely mostly if not all American line German Shepherd with faded color, that's all. Work on his issues and enjoy him!
