The SV has apparently proposed some rule changes for IPO trials that would become effective in 2017 if reviewed and accepted by the FCI.  The following is a rough translation of an article describing the gist of those changes.  I know what I think about this but am interested in others' comments.

The article is about the planned changes in the IPO trials. It says that the IPO1 trial is supposed to become easier so that handlers will see quicker results/have better success.

Here are the changes they are planning:

BH:
Sit and down can be performed from basic position or in motion.
IPO1-3:
Hurdle will be down to 95cm with a metal bar on top that will fall down when touched. Scaling wall will be 160cm. There will be 3 objects during tracking for all three trials.

IPO1, Obedience:
No retrieving over hurdle or scaling wall, only one jump with a recall.
IPO1, Protection:
No search for the decoy, dog is send straight to the decoy. Dog has to be on leash during transitions and transports.

IPO2, Obedience:
No stand, retrieving only on the ground and over the hurdle.
IPO2, Protection:
No attack on the dog in the back transport.

FH1 (that's what the tracking-only trial is called in Germany):
Track will be laid 2 hours prior to the trial, no streets and no changes in terrain.

The article also states that those changes are not official yet and will be reviewed by the FCI.

So breeders can title weaker dogs sooner and sell puppies?

So it's easier and the now a sport and no longer a test will attract more people?

Just another step, added to those of the past years, to emasculate the working dog and make him a better house pet for Mr. and Mrs. Everyone?

All these changes, past and now, prove once again that the SV is not about the dogs as the founder meant them to be.

So we all sit back and allow this to happen. Time to start looking for alternatives.

Koach, you are so spot on. It looks like they are proposing dogs can be titled mid stream in training. Fast to get title because you don't have to finish training. What a joke. The article didn't mention gun fire, I'm guessing by the direction the changes are going, gun fire will be eliminated completely. What a travesty the sv is making of first sch, now IPO.

Not good.........a very sad commentary on the SV's plans for the future of the breed.

And this should suprise no one. IPO is not a breed worthness test it,s a international sport. The bar has been lowered so many times I may have to teach my dogs to Limbo!

I could not agree more with the comments so far.  Just the idea of the SV proposing these changes to Schutzhund, now IPO, must have Captain von Stephanitz rolling in his grave.

Nice to finally find something on this forum about which we all can agree.

Have to agree with Bob. The alternative is the same it has always been. Choose, buy, breed, test for dogs that meet one's criteria for GSD. Don't view IPO as the end all test of GSD character, just a starting point for finding the right dog.

I see in another thread  Bob's dog titled to a 3. I really doubt he or the dog shortcut the training. There are people doing things the right way no matter how many do not.

Coal comes out of the ground in truck loads, have to sift through a lot of debris to find diamonds.

Thru the years I have seen the Sport of Schutzhund down graded...A little at a time...Each time I think they are killing a Sport that is fun...demanding and not easy for everyone or every dog...If the goal is too easy to obtain then the trip isn't worth it any more...

It's getting where other Dog Sports are looking better and better...SDA for instance...

I love Schutzhund and that it was truly a test for the dog...the handler and trainer...It gives you a chance to see what the dog is made of and can be useful for a breeding program...

It will soon be easier for a GSD to earn a BH than to pass the GSDCA's temperament test.
