I know there may be some NYers on this forum, and I need a recommendation. My own dog will not her vet ( or anyone outside my family ) to touch her. She will bite without hesitating. The vet has been seeing her using a combination of a muzzle and ace promezine ( a sedative ).With the muzzle alone the dogs puts up strong physical resistance against being touched/examined, and I am beginning to not like the idea of giving her ace promezine for vet visit .
So does anyone know of a vet in NY ( 5 boroughs or a little beyond ) that knows how and do handle working dogs?
Thanks in adavance.

On the recent suggestion by a trainer we have successfully gotten some strangers to meet her . but not sure the current vet will be willing to try this. In order for a strange person to meet her she must be the one allowed to go forward do the meeting not that the stranger comes forward and make any kind of verbal / auditory, visual or tactile attempt to meet her. If the stranger stands completely still, quiet, hands at their side, and completely ignore her; she will smell and sniff them a couple minutes and then shes fine but very watchful.

Eeeek. That sucks.
I don't know how a vet that deals with working dogs will do any different, they still have to touch the dog, and I'm sure muzzle her too since shes that reactive.
My vet asks that I muzzle mine since they do bitework, although they are social and have good temperaments. Not one has given them a problem, but staff feel more comfortable and I don't mind.

She wears the muzzle comfortably but she does not like the touch/ physical examination . On the last visit for her annual blood work the vet could not get her blood ( even though she muzzled ).

I don't see a way without tranqs or a muzzle since shes that bad.
Good luck though!

shes not bad; just a little different. I have read on forums where someone mentioned that Mambo z PS had to be approached the same way. let him do the approaching; no overt attempts to meet him.

What about obedience? Just asking.
A dog should never be out of control, a muzzle is fine, but she needs to behave - you are the handler.

Not bad? Can't be touched by non-threatening strangers, not even a little bit? I think we have a different idea of bad :-)
I hope you find a solution that works!

We can correct her with the prong and when we do... all she does is sit so as to make sure the leash is loose ( no pressure on her neck ) but she will still carry one very vocally.

Dog needs some obedience, I agree with susie.
I would continue working with a competent trainer to help her cope with her stress when being handled by strangers.
As I said above, as she is now, there is no way IMO to get around muzzle and tranqs.
