I had a pyo in a 1 year old female. About 6 weeks after her heat which was her second heat. Her first was at 8 months, she had the second 4 months later. She is sun silver the 3rd dog with close cycles that I have had with pyo. One was about the same age and the other was 4 years old. None were from the same sire or dam. Not even close. FYI, the first one I mention had an elevated white count not consistent with how high it is for pyo (forgot the figures, this was 2 years ago). I told the vet she has PYO!!. X-ray didn't show anything on her but it sure did on the 4 year old with PYO and both were open as was the other one with discharge. The discharge was bloody, clear, slightly yellowish and it did not smell on any of them. I don't recall the x-ray on the one, she was just taken in for a spay. Two of these girls were 6 weeks after a cycle.

All of them had swollen vulvas like they were in heat if that is any help to you. Forgot to add that. I didn't notice that though what I saw first was the discharge then I checked them.

She's discharging a LOT of blood, and it has clots in it, which I've never seen before with her heat. But what bothers me is her vulva isn't really swollen the way it normally is when she is in season. So, still not sure what is going on. And Ranger didn't actually mate with her. He's far too unsteady on his feet for that, poor guy!

Fever was down to 103 this morning, and she seems a bit livelier this evening. The real test will be when I feed her. She's hardly touched her food since Saturday.

Okay, evening temp is 102.2, which is pretty much normal, but she still ate very little.

1GSD1, there seems to be a connection between pyometra and close cycles in bitches. My friend's bitch that got pyo at about the same age as Eska generally had a 4 month cycle, and Eska's second heat was only 4 months after the first This current heat, though was 6 months after the last one.

I got your message, sorry about that.

Call me if you need me and you don't see me on here. I'll keep an eye here for a few days.

Okay, since Tuesday, this has gone from the vet not thinking Eska was sick enough to merit antibiotics to yup, we've got a full blown pyo! Her WBC count is off the scale, and the uterus is very distended (took an x-ray)

We'll be heading to the Ontario Veterinary College at Guelph for treatment, as I don't trust the nearest veterinary emergency clinic. Guelph also has reproductive specialists on staff, so they are much more experienced with dealing with this sort of stuff than your average E.R.

Here's the one piece of GOOD news from today: Are those nice hips, or what?

Geez, are you the unluckiest or what??? I hope she will be ok!

Will she be spayed or treated and bred next cycle?

Sunsilver

I'm going to go for the treatment, Jenni. Everyone in the clinic was exclaiming over what a super temperament she has. She was giving the tech kisses as she tried to do the x-ray!

She's an absolute beast on the schutzhund field, and will turn herself inside out trying to get to the decoy's tug/bite bag.

The vet's one concern was the lack of white blood cells in the vaginal smear. She has a very copious bloody discharge, but there are almost no white cells in it. It makes her concerned as to whether it's an open or closed pyo, and whether it can be treated.

Yes, that's why I asked...I thought they cleared her of a pyo because of that earlier, saying it "had" to be open with the copious amount of discharge. :/ Best wishes for a successful outcome that doesn't jeopardize her health.

We stand behind whichever decision you choose, Sunsilver. We only want what is best for Eska, whether that be a spay or try and treat. Don't let the Co ownership thing come into play at all when making that decision. Just her health.

((((HUGS)))) to both of you!!!!
