This can't be true. Scientists would not offer a test unless it is settled, infallible science. We all know that breeders should should not question any test that OFA offers and we should label any breeder as irresponsible that does not do the full range of tests. I hope no one questions the DM test.

I was just thinking about all the wonderful dogs who were pulled from breeding because their owners were trying to be responsible and relied on a totally bogus test which scared the hell out of how many people for no reason whatsoever? Makes my blood boil.

Marko, the DM 'test' is another bs money maker for ofa and the labs. The marker 'for DM' is only coincidental to the affliction...

Looking for simple solutions to complex problems always results in disappointment but people will buy into these simple solutions because they are cheap, fast, or fit into their plans.

The OFA x-rays for HD do not predict whether a dog will have puppies more likely to have HD ... X-ray analysis of a dog's hips tell us what the dog has with regards to hip health .. not how they got the HD or if they can pass on that HD to their offspring.

The BRCA gene mutation is the most studied simple single gene mutation in medicine and it is 70% accurate in predicting breast cancer. Another study looked at single gene mutations known to cause early death in humans .. ie if you have the mutation then you die as a child or early adult without exception. These mutations or deletions caused defects in body processes that were so fundamental that life could not be sustained when these mutations were present ... ie the body was broken and could not repair itself. However the researchers found that without any doubt there were some very, very few individuals who had these death mutations or deletions in genes that lived and there is no explanation as to how this is possible. Obviously there are other mutations or deletions in an almost infinitely small number of these "death" gene individuals that allow their body to repair the system or damage. Obviously the research into this phenomena is ongoing but the message is that the collective "we" as humans are not even close to understanding how genes function on a body or species wide scale.

Jenni, yes, I too was thinking of the dogs pulled on the results of this test, again I'll say shocking!!!!

by joanro on 15 April 2016 - 17:04

Bubba, I was never looking for a simple solution, and it certainly wasn't cheap. Nor did I go to ofa to find DNA tests to do on my dogs...ofa is supposed to be * Orthopaedic* foundation for animals, not 'every DNA test ever fabricated for profit' foundation.

That's why I suggest a 'class action' against the fraudulent lab.

Bump.
