Actually, if it weren't for the North East and the West Coast the US would be a third world shit hole. There would probably still be slavery.
Fun fact: everyone talks about the test scores of US schools vs other nations. Well, when US scores are broken down by state Massachusetts scored among the highest scoring nations while Florida was among the poor, underdeveloped nations. The top ten states in academic performance are Massachusetts, New Jersey, Vermont, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, Minnesota, Colorado, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire. The bottom ten states are Nevada, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Hawaii, Alabama, West Virginia, New Mexico, Louisiana, the District of Columbia (technically not a state) and Mississippi.

Actually if it wasn't for Republicans there would still be slavery, because the Democrats voted against ending it.

And those SOUTHERN democrats became southern republicans. Strom Thurmond switched from democrat to republican after the Civil Rights Act was passed. Keep in mind it still took a war to end slavery. What were the two sides in that?
