I've begun to notice that Valk likes to type a lot of words that don't mean anything.

He is not the only one. Its ridiculous the amount of people that offer so called training option. I'd say and iv said it before it's easy to read a post and know who is full of crap. I'd say alot of you think because you dog barks at a decoy he is a fully trained pp dog that will protect your life. Your dog heels with the ball under your arm he is and sits for a chicken wing means he is trained 😏. I bet most would not know how to proof your training. How to see if your dog is dependentable on all areas of his training. I bet most train in a club and when not ther an empty field.

Hmmm ... maybe so Bladedge; but try to remember this forum is open to all, not just to full time working dog trainers and producers. So it does not matter, does it, if some people only train less than seriously, or use Clubs as much for their social side as for the training opportunities ? Doesn't necessarily mean they do not know or acknowledge their own & their dogs' limitations.

Hund I'm not full time as a trainer. Also I understand this form but sometimes we need to listen and question and learn. Imo as long as eveyone is contradiction ecah other nobody learns anything. Some very good points have been made and they vanish in an argument that ends with no sense. I'm hear to learn myself. I'm very open to everyone who has an idea but we need to know when to stop and listen. As you said people know the dogs limitations. We also need to realise our own. That is how learning is achieved.

by Hired Dog on 14 October 2020 - 12:10

Blade, you are correct in your point about arguments, but, seeing as how most trainers cannot agree on anything, I listen, disseminate, look at the source and act accordingly.
I also understand what you mean about certain people not having an idea of what they are talking about and just talking to feel important, that is also part of being in a forum.
Honestly, I read some responses for humor, others for a "WTF" and still a few for picking out the nuggets of wisdom I know are in there. I dont know anyone here on a personal level, will most likely never meet anyone, so, my patience is not tested as hard.
I hope you understand what I said and it makes sense to you at some level.

I have NEVER given my working cattle dogs a treat in their life. The dogs work as that is their job, not because they expect a cookie. They stop focusing on the cows in anticipation of getting a cookie is exactly how dogs, horses & humans will get hurt, if not outright killed.

Different world.

by Hired Dog on 14 October 2020 - 13:10

TWC, "cookies" are not given when a dog is working, mostly, they are given when a dog is in training to reward the dog for performing a command and several other things that I wont get into here.
The reward at work comes from the drive release/fulfillment a dog gets when, lets say, hunting a human, or apprehending one.
Of course, every different job may require its own rewards, be it a toy or drive expenditure as mentioned above...some behaviors are self rewarding.

I use regular meatballs from the freezer section. Swedish and Originals, also Turkey. Cut in 4 to 6 pieces works wonderful for Obedience.

I always worry there might be too much onion added in things like that, BE.

Bladedge, I'm sorry, I thought it sounded like you were being snippy and trying to clear the path for 'serious only' discussions /posters; there's a history !

Hund no definitely not. I welcome everyone's opinions. You may learn some from the most unlikely members posting. Knowledge comes is every direction. Some people here I would listen to about obidence but not bite work and others on bites but not obidence. Obviously depends on the type of bite work there speaking about. Real.
