GSDGenetics

by GSDGenetics on 20 January 2010 - 09:01

How dark or light a sable appears also has to do with coat length & density of undercoat, as well as its basic color genetics.  A black sable with a lot of undercoat during the winter, won't be nearly as dark and rich in pigment as that same dog after going through his seasonal undercoat shedding in preparation for the summertime!!!

Saddle pattern sables may have such densely marked saddles that they can be difficult to tell from black and tans that have a lot of light hairs in their saddle, unless one can see a puppy picture.

In puppyhood sables are obvious, although as newborns a very black sable when wet, may appear black until it dries off!!!

Tom,
What a beautiful, feminine head on Jesse!
I really hope that more sabled colored dogs will be exhibited in the German style Conformation Shows, here is the USA.
I plan on participating with my lil Izzy.......
It is  shame that there are less & less of "other color" patterns being shown these days........
A well structured dog of any "correct" color, from ANY blood line should be proudly presented....jmo.
There are many very nicely structured working line dogs, and we should not only "utilize" them in breedings....but we should "proudly" present them to the Conformation world.......again..jmo.
Oso.....
Can't wait to see a pic of your young dog!

Silbersee

Yes, Robin I wholeheartedly agree that beautiful workingline dogs should be shown whenever possible. Even if the owners do not see any use in it and if for nothing else than to show that workinglines are beautiful too.
The thing is that a lot of them look impressive and well structured when stacked, but it is all in the movement. That is the most important tool to evaluate structure. If movement is not sufficient, they will not get rated well, period.
Even though it is off topic, I want to post a couple of photos of our homebred pride and joy, V-Onyx vom Silbersee, SchH3. When he started moving, the judge placed him in front of a couple of showline males. Onyx has great movement, bone and coat. His sister Olympia (the dog in my avatar) has an even plushier coat and a super front reach, which earned her a V-rating in Germany. I don't have any decent photos of her and won't for a while, because she is busy in the whelping box with her first litter, but here are some of Onyx at his first show in the workingclass when Charlie Starr handled him. It was a nasty wet day with pouring rain.

CONGRATS Chris!
What a super looking dog!  You know that I am a fan of both bloodlines....to me there is only one! The GSD!
However:...I too, want a dog that is pleasing in both structure AND temperment.......we LOVE to strongly compete in the Conformation Shows......that is our hobby & passion.
Carlos (my husband) is training Izzy to compete in both venues.....it is his personal goal.
Our goals are to further produce dogs that excell in both.......a road of much hard work, sweat & tears....I'm sure!
Best wishes Chris!  Hope to compete with you in the near future!
Sincerely,
Robin

That is how  I feel - there is only one breed! I do not want to be categorized into one area.
We will show Onyx again, time permitting! Our goal is also to enter him at the (WDA) Sieger Show, whenever it is halfway close again. With kids and fulltime jobs, it is not possible to go to every show or event like we used to do.
See you soon, hopefully, and the best of luck!
Chris

Good luck with the shows Silbersee and Robin.

I would love to see some pictures of Olympia and her puppies.

Robin, please keep us posted on how it goes with Izzy and her training.  I hear she is a real fire cracker-as well as being exceptionally good looking.

Michele,
There is room for you too!!!!!  Come on....the dogs in your "babies" pedigree are super looking, besides great working dogs......
You puppy deserves to "step up and help us conquer the ring"!!......cause we'll all try for sure, to get'em in the fields!...hahahahaha    God willing!

Pharaoh

Robin,

Ask Kim about Pharaoh.  He is two years and four months and quite a challange.  Kim called him "he's just a moose!" when last she saw him about a year ago.

I have made a lot progress, but a long way to go.  It is so hard for me to remember that I have taken dogs through the BH.  I remember that I had two GSD's who were very well trained, by me.  Both perfect off leash heeling, long down etc....seems like a dream.

I can only imagine him in the show ring.  Although, they do like them pulling and showing a lot of spirit.....but, he is over two and I think they expect a little more in the way of behavior.  I may be getting some help soon.

He's really not a puppy anymore.
