Your problem in the U.K. is your so called K.C. is not a member of the F.C.I so they are a law to their own.
All over the world the K.C. are F.C.I and show judge to the fci/wusv standard.

Funnily enough Carole, I was thinking of stopping the boosters.  My boy is due for his this month and I'm considering whether to bother.  They're fed raw and are never ill, except when my bitch had a benign tumour on her face, 3 days after her booster!!  Harvey Locke said that it was nothing to do with the booster!!!

by Penny on 16 March 2010 - 12:03

Me too.   My dogs have their initial vaccinations, then the booster at one year, then thats it.   Children dont get vaccinated every year, my vet sees so little of me (whoops dont tempt fate though) that he never even sends reminders..... Toby (Champion Alexbria at Mascani) is 14 years old in a month, and he hasnt got a clue how old he is, suffice to say he has seen the vet for initial vaccinations, a bee bite on his bum ! and his screening tests........ not bad, and he hasnt got a mirror, so doesnt know how gray and wobbly he is either.
The only dogs that I do every year are the ones going abroad, and thats it.  I am even very uncomfortable about all the tick and flea treatment to get back in to the UK, it can never be right if you are showing overseas, and have to travel back and forth and over treat your dogs and bitches.....  more beaurocracy gone wrong I think.    Mo.

mo,sascha.my regime for the last 20 odd years has been puppy  inocs.,health screening tests and thats it.did have 1 bitch blood tested (premate) and they got that wrong.when i enquired how much it would cost to just have bloods taken to be sent off by to john.allinson, the vet went mad and shouted at me....who is this person ,is he a vet.????only used him for pup.incs.after that.all they were interested in was money.they even wanted to close up an umbilical hernia on an old boy of 11 when i went up to the vet just for him to have an oldie check up ,it was offered at a very reduced rate,so thought i would take him even tho he was well.he died at 13 of a torsion.had him put to sleep as i didnt want him poked about and in pain at that age.perhaps Davy Hall might like to come on here for once and let us know how it was for him and nilo.would be greatful Davy or anyone else if this has happened to 1 of your oldie that was or is in double figures Thanks Carole.

Im new, and only registered so i could comment on this post.

I too watched the crufts coverage on More4, i don't have a German Shepherd or indeed any dog at present, but as a member of the *General Public* i was incensed at the comments made about the dog shown in the clip.

I felt strongly enough to complain to channel 4 about the comments made, on the day. I have lived with a German Shepherd who had hip dysplasia, in both hips, hardly any sockets and not anything that resembled ball joints. Severe enough that at 5 months old 2 vets determined an operation wouldn't help and he should be put to sleep.

With the aid of other GSD owners offering assistance such as swimming pools to build up muscle in place of bone and dietary help, he lived a happy, mostly pain free life until he was 8 years old, when he was put to sleep as the condition was causing him pain. He played with the other German Shepherds, he was walked, he went to training classes and shows with the other dogs and although he sat on the sidelines and only watched, he was as much a part of the family as any of the other dogs. Despite his condition he loved life and bought so much joy into mine.

If his parents had been hip scored or correctly assesed by the KC, he would never have been allowed to be born. Despite informing his breeders at the time, they continued, and the Kennel Club didn't want to know. I have no doubt that these *breeders* procduced other puppies with this condition. Its not people like the ones on this forum that are at fault here, it's pet owners and those that own a GSD and mate them with no care or concern.

I found Claire's comments extremely unjust and misleading, and felt terrible for the owner of the dog shown.

To my mind, if Claire had ever lived with, or seen a GSD with hip dysplasia she wouldn't have perhaps been so quick to jump the gun. But nobody held that gun to her head, and she should be made accountable for her words.

I suppose in essence, what i'm trying to say is my condolences for the owner of the dog in the clip, but anyone that knows anything about the breed will disregard what was said as total rubbish, and to the breeders that are on here, that are trying to do the best for the Breed, please continue to do so. The people that don't understand, have probably never owned a GSD, and would jump on the cause of anything that they felt was unjust. So although it's unfair, try not to let it get you down.

Please keep up the pressure on More4, the more e mails they get the more likely they are to do something.

A few calls to the KC might help also but I believe that Caroline Kisko put the phone down on Carol Keen when she tried to talk to her about it this week......very compassionate of her. Bill Hardaway says he knows nothing about it when he was quizzed..............................

Perhaps Bill Hardaway is waiting for "his" taxi driver's opinion?

I've emailed the editor of the Echo in my area this morning, but I've heard nothing back yet.

hello archania  and thank you for your support.i too had a male shepherd who had hip dysplacia in one hip.score 3-45.caesar coped extremely well with his affliction till he was put to sleep aged 13.he had some bad days ,usually during the cold winter months and then when spring arrived he would free run with the rest of the pack, jump around and play ball.in fact it wasn,t his dysplacia that he was put to sleep for but a torsion.DYSPLASTIC ANIMALS CAN AND DO LIVE A NORMAL LIFE,THEY COMPENSATE THIS AFFLICTION BY BUILDING MORE MUSCLE AROUND THE AREA.Carole Spelman Rheinmeister gsds.
