Max died around '36 so if you want to see his final influence in the breed look at the dogs around that time.
He was kicked out of the SV around '32 for not cooperating with the Hitler led German army.

Pardon me if I misunderstand you, but Read again! What does the last sentence say in your quote? "The back must slope straight down from the withers  "  Did I say that ANY part of the back should ascend upwards from the withers?  I think not. "Broken top line" or not!  That sketch does not show the back coming up from the withers. It shows it sloping down from the withers. You tell me WHAT PART OF THIS SKETCH SHOWS ANY PART OF THE BACK ASCENDING UP?! 
  This is very close to perfect breed standard!!! NOT ROACHED! It is descending not ascending. Looks to me very much like my photos of a bitch consistently described as HAVING A STRAIGHT BACK.  
I don't think anyone in their right mind would support the extremes Shaw describes. I've hated them from day one. Yes, it goes on, but rather than boycott the judges, do your research and boycott the breeders breeding these dogs, whether they are top dogs or not!! That's the only way it is going to change. No sales.... they will change their mind. But the thing about that is there will always be a "sucker" around the corner who thinks because a dog wins it's the best there is. One can only try.

There was about 1 year's time between the stacks. The first one was taken at the BSZS in 2010 when she was 22 months. The second when she was about 2.5yrs. The gating ones were taken at about 18 months old. She is now almost 3.5yrs. Thank you all for the compliments.

Thanks, Noddi. She was a really good dog, earned a lot of SV and AKC titles before I got her as my learner dog. I gave her a retirement home. She's the dog in my avatar.

Some of you have very nice, recognized accomplishments with your dogs. And no matter the venue, represents a serious investment of time and finances. It is fruitless to argue with people whose greatest financial investment in the GSD, after the initial purchase, is a pooper scooper.

And whose time invested in becoming an "authority" is time spent on the internet and the "virtual" GSD, rather than accomplishments with an acutual furry critter.

As for the collection of horrors that some keep of others dogs, shame on you. I am closing in on 30 years with the GSD and I can show both what I consider correct and incorrect from my own dogs, without having to pilfer and slam what others do.

And for the record, there are better sources for explaination/interpretation of the standard than Ms. Shaw. Mr. Donald's article is one of the best I have come across. Fred Lanting's articles are also excellent.

Thank you DJC,She reminds me of chiki.I have a very nice photo of her aged just 18 mths winning Special yearling bitch at a championship show in jun 2004 n my facebook profile is of her as a mature bitch,not sure how old but i think it was taken at crufts 2009,so she,d be 6 yrs 3 mths n was 3rd in Limit Bitch.We just show in the veteran classes now,when there is one.Boy dont i just get the withdrawal symptoms.Her 1st show this year will be in April,she missed the one in Jan as she was in full season n i didnt enter her for crufts as judge didnt like her the last time.I,m with u on that sketch of Linda Shaw,not roached to me as i said in an earlier thread n yes i too hate some of the specimens with the exaggerations that are creeping in.I dont /didnt follow all the others in using the current import of the month.Chiki is out of a homebred sable male of older german lines n the more correct type english ones(by that i mean has a mix of german/better propotioned english lines).I first started with a bitch who,s sire was all german breeding(Natan v.d.Pletzierfarm x a giaganterhaus bitch ,i think...memory not too good these days)n dam was english lines.Cassie took after her german ancestors while her bruvver was english looking.She was mated to Zak V.Adeloga.(1st litter)n Ch.Rosehurst Chris(2nd litter)(Sire Uran V.W.)KEPT A DAUGHTER ,who was mated Ch.Bedwins Siegaro(Jeck V.Noricum)kept a daughter,mated to a homebred male(mostly german lines)n kept a daughter which is Chiki.Done reasonably well at ch.shows with a few females n 2 males,as have 2 other kennels here in UK with the same lines back from the Bedwins Siegaro litter n most have lived very healthy n long lives(most 12 yrs n a few upwards of that.Sorry to digress.Carole S.

links, one can see that the withers are basicly shoulder blades, the back is the area where the backbone is above the ribs, the loin which is inbetween the back and the cropu and the croup is the area above the pelvis.

from what i understand, a roach backed dog has a curvature of the spine where the back and loin meet.

Rik, one of the posters to this thread is currently engaged in a discussion with Fred about toplines. I hope she will share Fred's comments with us with his permission.

It was good seeing Fred in NC. He still handles a GSD better than  men half his age. I wish I could run around the ring as well as he does.
