Having read and reread that post, it appears to me he's saying is that dogs that "appear" to be exceptions shouldn't be utilized because of what the "average" entails.

I read that as saying we shouldn't breed for extremes, or ignore character flaws. For instance, if a particular line is known for stable nerves, but your dog tends to have a hair trigger, don't ignore it and breed him/her because 'all the other dogs in the pedigree are stable, so he/she is just a fluke, and should produce stable dogs.'

That makes a lot more sense than what I got from it.

@ Duke....I know the mother line was super....that's why she was brought in...consistent with my views on breeding. @ Daryle....if that's what you understand.....fine....others seem to understand what I am saying ....there will always be some that don't understand you. If its you for me....that's fine with me....lol

by Gustav on 18 July 2012 - 19:07

@Daryle....where am I criticizing you????? Because you tried to attribute contempt of Tom to my thinking and I corrected you....when I want to describe a dog in terms of contenpt, I will say it openly, I wont need someone to interpret that for me. You and I are not going to have dialogue about me explaining myself to you. I stay in my lane, and try very hard to stay out of yours. Nothing personal......there's room enough on this board for both of us to navigate without direct interaction between us.

"I dont need a trial to tell me by 18 months if this dogs has the components of a breedable working dog or not"

No, but you need to train for several years to know if the dog can hold up to the physical stresses of working, I realize that often we breed females before we know, but we can choose stud dogs that have worked for several years and stayed sound either in sport or police etc.  I agree I can usually tell by 18 months if the dog is going to have the mental qualities to stand up to a long working life.

Sorry Louise, I thought you said you could only know about a dog's character by training them to 4 years of age. I have found that not to be the case in my travels. As for the physical rigors of working, I don't see a problem with a person wanting to wait until the dog has performed for several years before they use them at stud. Personal choice.....I have had excellent pups from a 10 1/2 year old Reiko v Hena-C and a 11 1/2 year old Tom z PS. But I have also produced police progeny from a 23 month old police dog. If this works for you, by all means stick with it.

I personably own 14 GSD all carry Tom but 2 in ped and 2 are line breed on Tom 3-3
I have Bomber pups Bandit pups and Bomber grand pups so I can say I "know" the lines
Obviously I like the Tom lines or I wouldn't have so many but I can also speak of what I see in the lines
Good and Bad
I see over the top prey (great for easy training)
In the shitters week nerve but still a heavy dose of over the top prey which makes a unstable nightmare
All mine have an "off' switch but one, so the norm to me is an off switch
Great pigment
females are small and I mean really small
The ones that are good are amazing couldn't ask for better
So my opinion is if you breed on Tom to out cross and outcross hard after
I also done that and brings back size and stability uniform to litter
I don't think anyone especially  me is bad mouthing the Tom lines just being honest about what the line carries and what to look for when making breeding selections.

When you say "really small", do you mean under standard?
