NOT SURE WHY THE BREEDER NEEDS TO BE IN YOUR BACK YARD?
Seems to me your missing out on a lot of quality, but then maybe all you want is a dog, and there are lots of them at the shelter.
IF you really want a Quality German Shepherd you should check your bank balance, and if your looking for a good one then you should be able to afford Shipping by Air. To Cal from Central USA shouldn't cost more than $500. for one day Air, with crate, health cert, & Vet shots included.
That means you can look all the way over to the Appalachian Range. Yah I know where there is one premium male left in Northern MN, breeders always keep the best till last in case they decide to keep one or two. This one is a Male. Line bred from Vegus du haut Mansard and Rapi Supra, both are in his four generation pedigree. You could have him in S.CA by New Years Eve for $3,500.00, he's 14 weeks right now. 218 four four four
zero zero three three. Good luck on your search.

I own a dog that I purchased as a puppy from Kreative Kennels and he is a great dog to live with. His name is Livingston N Kreative and can be found on this data base. He can also be found on working dog.eu. He is healthy with OFA good hips and elbows. He has a BH title and is working on his SCH. 1 His protection drives are extreme, his retrieves are fast and his tracking is methodical almost never missing a corner. I am working on the control work in the protection phase and article work in the tracking phase. I am retired now so hopefully the work will be completed by the spring. He is good with kids and people. Once I am ready for another dog I will more likely buy my next dog from them too. My experience with them has been excellent. I have been involved with training (CDX and Schutzhund 3) for over 30 years, but like one responder said you must know what you are looking for in order to get the best results. I hope you well in your endeavors, Charles.
