Not trying to say this is the case of any dogs/breeders named on this thread, but it isn't hard to sell dogs that just bite equipment to police departments. Unfortunately, a majority of departments don't have the knowledge, and think a snarling dog at the end of the leash that will bite a sleeve will suffice.  Although I would hope trainers and breeders would have the morals and the knowledge to differentiate a real dog vs a sport dog, there are a lot of trainers out there that sell "police dogs" that are not capable of doing the work.

The job title "Police K9" doesn't necessarily mean success in a breeding. Not picking on SL/WL police dogs here, same thing of course applies to all bloodlines and breeds.

Since there are so many unqualified dogs in police work, I would be interested in seeing videos of the dogs that have made a career in LE.

As an example of the issues with misinformed trainers selling dogs to PDs-

I know a trainer who bred a litter of SL Malinois. At 6 months of age, they sold one of the puppies to a police department. After a 2 month patrol "school", the 8 month old PUPPY and her handler were "certified" and working patrol in their community.  The trainer now uses that particular dog to advertise her accomplishments as a trainer, and to promote her breeding stock.

Is the 8 month old puppy a police dog? NO.

Although the trainer has the BEST intentions as a producer of "police dogs", she lacks the experience to know that you can't have a puppy doing real patrol work.

True - we don't know that these dogs really do a good job, but we don't know they don't either, do we?

Blitzen, I agree.

That is why I would like to see some video. Everyone has different ideas for what a police dog should be.

If the GSD's pictured here with the officers can't do their jobs, why do they keep them around? Why does it matter what any of us think a police dog should be as long as the officers are happy with their performances? Why would they keep going back to the same breeder/s for their dogs if they weren't good dogs?

Hired Dog .. more SSDD from you??  No dogs or pedigrees just smoke and opinions that in retrospect seem pretty weak and unsubstantiated.  One of my SL X WL pups went to a K9 officer that took him through the same certification that all dogs of any breed go through in NC and he then went on to work until 9 years of age.  I even talked to a couple of people that the dog helped arrest so I think we can assume the dog was a good one trained and certified .. raised from 8 weeks of age by a trainer who runs the K9 division of his department.  The puppy he got was the third best puppy in the litter of four.  There was a smaller but definitely tougher male and a equal sized and tougher female but he chose the biggest male with the most level head and stable personality.  If a department has a shit dog it is more likely to be one that bites everything and everybody ( as in a Mal ) than one that will not bite.  A lot of departments still have KNPV dogs be they GSD, MAL, Dutch, or mixed.  Most of the departments do not want IPO titled dogs because the tracking and bite work they have learned does not fit what they need ( crap tracking and arm centric bite work ).  A KNPV dog is more easily certified and is the choice of the brokers that sell to the police it seems and I guess they know their business as if the dog fails to make the police department happy they replace the dog.  The brokers get a high price but they guarantee results so if KNPV dogs are what they are selling it is because they are cheaper to buy in Europe and less likely to flag out of their program.  I have posted my dogs pedigree below .. do you need news clipping hired dog or better yet do you have something to offer other than smoke .. got any dogs as examples of bad SL X WL police dogs or just the usual BS from you??

Melba, is Eros Tom Schrader's dog? I think I may have seen him a few years back. If it's the same dog, he was used for the demo dog at an SV show and trial handled by Tom's daughter. What a fantastic animal and beautiful too. Wonderful temperament.

If you have an opinion with no dog to talk about this is not the thread for you!!  Original Post   "Who Owns or Has owned a WL X SL Cross .. facts not opinions"

Blitzen,

My county's K9 has failed to engage EVERY SINGLE suspect that he has been sent to apprehend. Guess what? He's still operational. And from what I saw on Facebook less than a week ago from his handler, he is "incredibly proud" of his K9.

A dog won't engage suspects is okay to leave operational because the handler is happy with him? No. No it is not okay.
