This is in no way meant to criticise any dogs or the judge, but I notice many of the dogs were mentioned as having a short croup.  Do you think this is something that breeders need to be looking carefully at if they are planning on breeding from these dogs - as this has been pointed out maybe its something that has crept in without anyone realising it may be becoming more prevalent.

Also where the judge has made the comment 'big' in relation to size, is that taken to mean too big or just at the top end of the size range?    I'd be interested in your thoughts.

Hi Jeevs,

Our male dog was 2nd in Yearling Dog and his critique states "BIG" - however we are not concerned with this word being used as he passed his Breed Survey Class I on the 28th of March and his height was measured at 65.5 cms which is within the allowed range for males.  Compared with the other 2 entrants he was larger overall and some would say his measurement is "TOP SIZE".

Like you I see many short croups these days along with flat and steep croups in both males and females and I would agree this is something that may as you said have crept up on us as so much emphasis has been put on reducing size/height over the last few years.  It seems we forfeit one thing for another and still no perfect dog/bitch (everybody's dream) - this is nature I'm afraid.  Perhaps more attention to correcting the croups with your choice of stud dog or complimenting a bitch with a good croup by using a dog with a correct croup also - nothing is every perfect is it?

Thanks Aileen, having judged my other breed abroad I know how difficult it is to get the right phrase you want to convey what it is you are trying to say, and I also know how repetitive some critiques seem as you 'say what you see' about each dog, rather than sit and write them after the show when most of us tend to try to use different phrases for each dog so it doesn't seem as you are just repeating yourself.

Lets hope the owners/breeders take notice of any shortcomings pointed out and do whatever is necessary to improve the situation before it becomes the norm.
