Wanderlust when you do decide on a dog I hope you share with the rest of us :)

I did not pressure Von Hayden for the papers due to the fact that this litter was born around the same time her home was destroyed, she said she would send the paperwork as soon as she can and I understand her whole house is in storage right now, I understand the stress that she is under and I won't ad to it, I had a great experience with her and the pups are great, we are having a blast with them both!!  I see nothing wrong with taking two pups, we have been raising them for over 18 years, I currently have 6 shepherds and they all get along great.  We are just going to have fun working and training the pups, we have plenty of time for papers...  Maybe I am too trusting, but I see no reason for her not to send me papers, the pups have been well taken care of, all shots and wormings currrent, great weight, beautiful shiny coats, confident and playful, so no I am not worried...  I do try to give people the benefit of the doubt.  All I know is I am very happy with the whole experience, it was way better than some other dealings I have been through with breeders.

My two girls...  Heart  The best stacked photos we could get with these two antsy girls...

If you're used to 6 GSDs getting along, please be prepared for these girls to try to kill each other. Take more precautions than you think you need to.

While we're talking about "police K9s" how about "K9 handlers" who aren't really?! I have had two JUST THIS WEEK that I could tell were full of it. A little research, and sure enough. Both are wannabes. One is a park district ranger who brings his own pet to work, and the other doesn't even appear to be in any type of law enforcement. WTH???? LOL   They both got extremely angry when I told them either they were very new at their jobs or they were lying because one glimpse at their handling skills with PUPPIES no less told me they were green as grass. That went over like a lead balloon.

Jenni, LOL. I just had to launch one of those lead balloons two weeks ago! Sent the deposit back when the balloon wouldn't fly, LOL ;)

I would have no problem buying a pup from von Hayden. I've seen some of them work. I tend to show and train my pups. You don't need papers for German show till the dog is 1 yr. old. I can't see Kim giving anyone a hard time about the papers IF they are, in fact, actively showing and training one of her pups. Obviously its the people who don't do anything but breed them she is trying to impede.

So you have seen this breeder actively training and titling dogs?  She has trained/titled dogs herself?  with what trainer?  what dogs?  Or was that just something you heard, or the breeder told you?  and the parents' titles and "certified police K9" status - the hips/elbows - did you actually see those scorebooks or certs yourself, or was that also just something she told you about and you believed?  Good luck getting those papers...

If the breeder advertises the pups as AKC-registered, and if I BUYit as an AKC-registered pup, then I damn well better get the AKC-registration papers WITH the pup.   With the limited exceptions of instances where a bitch is imported in whelp and the transfer of her registration is in progress at the time the pups are sold, or the stud dog was imported immediately before the mating and HIS registration transfer is in progress at the time the pups are sold [I'd want to see documentation of either circumstance before I'd part with penny one, though] there's simply no bloody reason a breeder shoud not be ready and able to hand over the pup's registration documents at the same time the puppy is received by the buyer. Everything else is just excuses and sloppy recordkeeping.

Well if I have raised shepherds for over 18 years and never have a fatality or fight, I think I might be doing something right and must be taking pretty good precautions...

by hexe on 02 November 2012 - 19:11

Blkdog, sure, but what's that got to do with registration papers?

Oh, sorry, I forgot about the suggestion that you keep a tight rein on things with two female littermates, lest you have the horrid experience of a 'bitch fight'...which, since you've managed to avoid one so far, you've been lucky enough to never have to contend with, but trust--it is an AWFUL, HORRIFYING event, one I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.  So I'll echo Jenni's concerns, no differently than I would to anyone else who had the depth of your experience AND who's been fortunate enough to have been spared the sorrow of this particular variety of discord in the canine ranks: don't let yourself get complacent, no matter how lucky you've been or how well the girls appear to get along with each other. Don't let one single lifted-lip, one flash of the white of an eye, one stiff-legged approach or interaction go unchecked, and don't let them interact without supervision. Their relationship can change in a nanosecond, and you could end up with one or even two dead females if that happens.

Our older Von Hayden dog is 3 years old, and went OFA H&E good.  The dad is a SchH3 multiple times, Dam is SchH from Von Salztalblick Kennel.  Kim has her papers, by mutual agreement, and at this time she's on a limited registration.  When/if time comes that she is to be bred the registration will be upgraded to a full registration.  Same agreement we have on the two pups.  I generally agree with the caution on having 2 sisters grow up together in same home... Have been a Vet Tech for 25 years and trained Sheps for 30... taught obedience  classes for 20 years... etc... so, yes am experienced, BUT anyone with littermates, or two dogs about the same age from puppyhood in the same home needs to take special precautions to prevent problems.  Not just in the danger of a battle royal between the two, but also as one will almost always dominate the other.  Seperate training and social time for each dog is important to allow each dog to grow to their potential, as well as to build a strong bond with their person.   I can understand some folks worrying about papers if they don't know a breeder personally, but have known Kim and her Mother before her for a good 40 years (Kim was just a kid when I met her) and am confident that papers will not be an issue when the time comes.  Meanwhile I am just going to enjoy my furkids...

Skyler and Svenya (Khali) are littermates to THErskine's male btw...

  Svenya (Khali) @ 6 months                                                                      Skyler @ 6 months

they are Hawk V. Eichenluf/ Zidane V Stevenhaus granddaughters. Very high food drive, very social... an rather purty IMHO.
