 Hi Ulf,

Nice speaking to you again...What a nice day I spent watching those dogs work in company of very nice people..Thanks again for making it possible..

In the original tape I did mention the name and and the dog and the score...I even sent a e-mail to Kristin to have her permisson to publish it but never had any response  so for privacy sake I removed the name etc...I happened to film Kristin and it was the second best run of the day..I was lucky!!

I tape it first for me but for other people in my herding group so they can see what the German Shepherd was intended to do as a shepherd dog..My instructor was pretty amazed on how the dog interacted with the sheep being very calm around a large flock and she really enjoy seeing the way they move the sheep and worked around them..

A very good dog indeed...too bad I was a little late that morning to see your dog Ulf who had the best run of the day..

And yes..your statement is in fact very true..Ulf is excellent...and a very nice guy to meet!!

Hope to be there next year...

P.S:  Ulf you said : No, prey drive and herding drive are not the same. They are related but are totally different. A herding dog is not driven by prey drive.

Can you please explain a little bit more the difference between the two..Thanks..

I am also starting Tending in a month or so. I am lucky, I have my own sheep and goats, granted only about 25, but enough to start with. Mary Weir is also moving back to NM - she iwll set up about 1/2 hours drive from me.
Judy Vanderford, Pam Wolff and Dawna Sims will also be coming to give clinics.

I can barely wait

Herding, tracking, using a bird dog, having the dog retrieve, doing protection work in SchH using prey drive – all these activities are done by using certain drives which derive from the wolf’s hunt. They are all related but they are not the same. They are all specific parts of the hunt, i.e. tracking is searching for the prey by following the scent of the prey’s track, herding is originated in the wolf’s behavior to encircle its prey. Of course, we are not using the “raw” and original drives only, there was and is a certain selection process ever since Humans utilized dogs for certain jobs. Herding for instance is without the final kill. The needed grip in herding is part of a selection process.

Prey drive and herding instinct are closely related and the drives even overlap in some areas. Yet, a dog with good prey drive can be a lousy sheep herder and a dog lacking prey drive may indeed be a good sheep herder. What is missing with a dog totally driven by prey drive when tending sheep is the “feel” for the livestock since the dog’s only desire is to get to a sheep and same dog will not be satisfied until and unless the dog gets the sheep. In fact, a dog with only prey drive and no herding instinct is hard to train if at all possible. Fortunately, such dog is rare.

Herding instinct in its various forms on the other hand does not make the dog wanting to go after a sheep at all times. It can and it will do that, too. However, the dog’s drive is also focused on the entire flock.
