Puppies yet? You have to have puppies by now.... Waiting patiently

by vomlittlehaus on 14 March 2010 - 17:03

I was just reviewing my females temperature chart from when she was due. Her temp peaked to the highest then exactly 12hrs later had dropped to the lowest then delivered within 24hrs of that drop. I know every dog is different. I was taking her temp 3x a day. (Didnt want to miss something :) ). When I started taking her temp (about 5 days before she actually delivered), her temp stayed in the 99 degree range the whole time. The highest was 100 then dropped to 97.7. Thats when I knew we were ready to go. I do remember her discharging some mucus, but I guess I never wrote down when that was. I think it was a couple days before she delivered.

Good luck with the whelping, the temperature is the best guide.

Nope, no puppies. I know for a fact now that she conceived after the progesterone test showed her as "out of heat." I wasn't there for the test and don't know the number; it was Idex's analysis that she was well past ovulation.

Maybe I just got her really fat? HAH.

I believe its not good to let more than 24 hours pass after the temperature drops.   If something does not start happening soon  I would probably think about getting the vet to check her again, especially as she had the mucus discharge some time ago.   How many days is she?  I had a female go 68 days from the first breeding (we did as US scan to check  the puppies were Ok at 67 days).  Her temperature eventually dropped but then nothing.  She ended up needing a C section, but all the puppies were fine.  Good luck, and I  hope for some good news soon.

Okay, so just out of curiosity. Going by her last bred date, what would be day 62 for her?? I dont remember if you had mentioned dates already or not. And I am just picking day 62 as the 'average'. I actually predicted when my female ovulated by checking her saliva. The saliva gets a higher concentration of salt in it. I put it on a slide and looked under the microscope. Was really cool to see the daily changes. The salt chrystalizes when the saliva dries. She bred once and only once and we got 7 puppies. Not bad for first timers (both dogs).

What do you count as day Zero?
Dang, wish I'd known that, since I actually have a microscope.

I actually counted from day of ovulation. The egg has to mature before it can be fertilzed. That is probably why this breeding took. I dont remember of the top of my head for how many days it has to mature. In people, we ovulate an egg that is ready to be fertilized. And remember, the sperm can live for around 5 days inside the female just waiting for an egg.

So she probably ovulated, which the test showed, but the eggs had to mature before fertilzation could occur. Then they eggs were actually ready by the time she was bred. All the information I just found online. Maybe look up some charts that show the heat cycle in canines and see if you can figure out a better due date for her. That might ease your mind a bit, especially if you think her temp isnt going to change.

I'm tending to agree with you. It can be the only explanation for a four to five day discrepancy...day 62 from her last bred date is actually tomorrow. So it almost has to be that when her progesterone was at like 15, she was peaking for HER.

Hey look how pretty she looks....I'm very pleased with her overall condition.

I just looked it up, and her progesterone count wasn't 15, it was 25. So I guess it's still possible for them to conceive that late. Dr. Autumn Davidson once told me keep on trying for as long as she'll stand for it, even though it might looks like it's all over. Glad we did, that's all I can say.
