But Tom does often lighten coat color, decrease size

I've noticed those 2 aspects as well, although I don't necessarily think of them as negative traits. Mind you, I've only seen a dozen or so adult Tom descendants, so not a significant population.

Interesting that it was mentioned about lightening coat color.  I had a litter sired by a Tom son and some of the pups ended up being very light in color as adults.  Neither parent was washed out/light so I had wondered where such light colors come from.  Some of the dogs from this litter are not real larger, however my females are not real large either so I did not think twice about that.

My recent litter (almost 10 weeks old now) is from an Ellute son and all of the puppies are very dark in color and pigament.  The mother of this litter is the same lines as the mother of the previous litter.

"Same lines"...so they're littermates, or from the same parents?

To further explain, some of you act like Tom is the only one that contributes. Everything comes from Tom if he is in your pedigree.

@ cphudson.  i am intrigued with your luna grandson.  could you either post a link to his pedigree or pm me with it if you think that is more appropriate.  he sounds so much like our ajax dexel grandson from 30 yrs ago.  what an awesome fella he was!  i have looked long & hard for temperment like that & ended up with a lot of idiots instead. pfffftttt.

GSD2727, I'm not sure the stud you used on the first litter, but the lighten of color from select Tom lines / line breeding is effected by who Tom was combines with in the dam line.
Elute carries darker colors through his dam line; Aline von der Mohnwiese  from both grandsires; Troll & Grief would add richer darker pigment.
Tom x Dixi vom Hause Santiages = Vito, he can carry the genes for smaller size & lighter coat because the dam line of Dixi didn't help to improve in this area. Offspring can be more variable.
But then you bred Vito x Noditha vom Teufelsgrund  = Bomber, you get the rich blanket sables & solid blacks that add the darker pigment & the dam line increased size.
There is no sure out come with any dog / line, but ideal combinations with every dog / lines that help strengthen the other weakness.
Dam lines are more important than the stud lines, even if the stud is out of famous lines. The Dam's provide the building blocks needed for temperament, drives, etc..

ziegenfarm I'll pm you my boy's pedigree. I don't want to change the topic of thread.

Chaz - when I said "same lines"... They are mother / daughter.  However, the daughter is not from the litter sired by the Tom son.

What I have noticed out of Tom lines is very high prey very slow to mature good defense but not a civil dog (great sport dog)
Females are small I have only had great pigment
Litters are not uniform have awesome pups and shitters all different size shapes
They ones that are "good" are super good the ones that are crap are super crap
Tom lines are good for top sport dogs and all around good family dogs with an off switch
