Don't forget the electricity/gas costs for heating the whelping area and doing all the laundry. And how about the situation when you get the pup that just fails to thrive no matter how many vet visits you do and you have to put the little darling to sleep? And then testing to find out WHY the pup failed to thrive? The $5k scenario for a nice bitch is a VERY low estimate in my experience. If you buy the bitch on spec as a puppy then you have immensely more than $5k invested in her and finding a NICE bitch, already titled, in that price range is a rarity. Breaking even is a dream come true, a lot of times. The Brittany bashing that happens over assertions like hers (we're all "greedy breeders") is not because of defensive behaviors it's because of frustration. Those who are doing this are really pouring heart, soul and huge amounts of labor into trying to produce better dogs, not to mention cash. It's insulting and hurtful to demean our efforts. IMO, anyway. JDN - US

brittany - are you paying attention? several people have put a lot of thought and effort into their posts to educate you (and others). if i got paid for the effort i put into a litter, it wouldn't come CLOSE to minimum wage.....
