We went herding!! - Page 1

My "useless American" went from the show ring to sheep yesterday, and he had an absolute BLAST! The instinct tester loved him and said she'd be proud to have him on sheep. She wasn't as sure about my German boy, who was extremely pushy.

Justin, IMO, was the better dog :)

Oh, and Strauss managed not to kill or injure any sheep. But notice how much more "in your face" the worker had to be with Strauss, as opposed to Justin's comparatively more laid back style

Xeph - That was totally cool!  How did you find a place to take your dogs for testing?  I'd love to find a place like that for my dogs.

Wow.  She looks like she's been doing it for a long time.  So natural looking.  I'd love to try my dogs out.  I am going to look around and see if there's anything nearby. 

yea  that was  jasmine first time herding sheep,  
that was her first time herding anything.
she  is a natural , and i am going to get her some lessons.
would like to get her a tittle.
jasmine is a true working dog , she can do any job, she is a great girl.
i just love her.

you should see about getting your dogs tested , i think they would love it. 

Xeph, it looks like both of them had fun.  I agree luv, I never knew anyone in my area who does herding, I'd love to try it too.  OMG mew, that is too funny! 

Congratulations Xeph!  Some dogs just "get it" on herding right away. It's instinctive for them. Others require a few tries to get it. Some never do really get it although they can be taught to herd but always with direction. Some can't be trusted with sheep. The HIC tester is looking for the "natural".

I'm waiting to have my German boy tested when he is a little older. From what I've seen of herding, the German dogs are more aggressive with sheep, which AKC HIC testers don't like. The American dogs are gentler which seems to go over better. JMO after watching many herding instinct tests and an AKC PTT and A course herding trial. I've only seen HGH on video, but that's a cool style.
