Aileen Ann Maethesion: That dog is Videx Castro isn't it. Son of Videx Razor. I have seen the 15 month old picture, but never the 7 week old one. I quite like him. I think he has good angulation, and placement.

Too true, Windwalker!  I've heard a number of people say that about Manhattan, the only GSD to win BIS at Westminister. His conformation had its flaws, but there was something about the way he carried himself that just screamed 'LOOK AT ME!"

A dog's expression will grab my eye, too. That's why this dog wound up in my picture file, in spite of his conformation not being the best. He's got a lovely head and neck:

Here's a dog that REALLY deserves mention, as one of the pillars of the breed, and he certainly catches my eye, as well. If you don't know who he is, you need to do some homework...

Interesting to note the lack of angulation in the rear, compared to current VA dogs....

Something we could maybe address in this thread....

I've noticed fans of the GSD sometimes have trouble agreeing on what a good croup looks like. Many dogs are criticized for having a 'short, steep croup.'   I've heard Fred Lanting say some of the confusion is due to people not really understanding just where the croup begins. Some think it's everything south of the last set of ribs. (Maybe that's where the hinged back comes from?)

Anyway, I'd like to see some pictures of dogs which you think have REALLY excellent croups, so we can all learn about this.

Personally, I like Mutz's croup, though by modern standards it would be considered short and steep. (Ooops, now you know who that is in the photo above...)

What the heck...most of you probably know by now my tastes in GSD conformation are permanently stuck in the 60's...   If someone could just bring Mutz, Bodo or Bernd back from the dead, I'd be a very happy gal!

I agree that truly correct confromation was left behind in the 60s. Mutz, Bernd, Bodo those were correctly structured dogs for working conformation.
Unfortunately, correct conformation from the 70s to today, in both AKC and SV showrings, is defined as structure that leads to a gait that shows the picture desired by the judges. That's how croups and fronts are determined to be correct.
However, show ring gait is NOT a correct working gait.
The correct working gait for a GSD can be shown by GSDs working on HGH trials. Just go to youtube and search for HGH videos. It'll show the kind of gait GSDs actually do while working sheep. They don't just trot handsomely in a circle. They jump, brake suddenly, do 180 degree turns, accelerate, cruise, trot and do a lot of galloping.

Yes, Videx Castro at Allsala - 2nd photo AGED 9 MONTHS, very mature for his age.  He is now 15 months old - had his hips and elbows done in October  -

Hip Score is 5:7 =12 (below Breed Average/Mean)
Elbow Score is 0:0
Haemphilia Negative.

So over the moon with those results - will be Breed Surveyed in 2010.

Hi Carole, good to hear from you.  Maybe see you during the Shows next year.  Hope your Chikki gets her 3rd Ticket, Dale thinks she is a Veteran now, but no problems, Ch. Lindanvale Vegas got his 3rd Ticket when he was 7 years old at Fife GSD Champ Show in Scotland is my memory serves me well.  Cody is maturing well and is such a brilliant character, looking forward to the Shows next year.  See you there.

MERRY XMAS TO ALL AND HERE'S TO A PROSPEROUS 2010.

This guy has caught my eye for quite awhile, and now I've had the chance to use him at stud. Getting pretty old, but the semen was still good under the microscope. Hope it works as well inside the girl.
