Never said that they didn't exist either Silbersee just thought the dogs that are posted even some of the ones in the peds that are posted look black and tan or red and black just faded out. Didnt mean to piss you off. Just an observation. Good luck with your animals.

Kitkat, that dog is more like what I'd call sable.

If there is this much confusion on colors of sable with you guys, how do breeders/?? register the dogs with the colors?  Man that could be a catch 22.

by oso on 14 January 2010 - 18:01

There is not really a confusion, when the puppies are tattooed its obvious they are sable, you would never confuse them with black and red, and all of the dogs posted on this thread are sable without a doubt.  in life you would see that the hairs on their saddles are not solid black, but black-tipped.  None of them look faded either!!

KitKat's dog is the same colour as the others in this thread (and probably from the same lines, can you let us know his pedigree Kitkat?), he just has a much shorter coat than the others as far as I can tell, and the darker-tipped hair extends further down the thigh area.

Nans gsd, I think that's a good question! There's a showlines bitch in my club who started out black and red, but her saddle has disappeared and only a few black hairs remain (she's about 6 yrs. now). So. Do you call her solid red, faded sable, or the original Black and Red?

Here are some photos of my showline sable, Onni von den blauen Bergen:

In the earlier pics it is more obvious that she is sable.  Nowadays she could pass for a B&T saddle if you don't look very closely.

Why is Oso's dog not a sable?  My working line dog is a patterned sable, albeit less coat than Oso's dog, but the sable she has looks about the same.  She is pure working lines, both parents were sable.

I love this sable showline, Margman Torsten (Timo son)

He has sable progeny

Like Oso says, look at the puppies, they are definitely "true sable" (whatever that means).  No mistaking a sable puppy.

VonMarischal,
Puppies are born a particular color pattern...that is the color they are registered as.
The particular color pattern doesn't "change" as they age.......just the depth of color & pigment, as they mature.
Thats why some black & red or black & tan dog's  saddles "fade" with age.......they don't "become" sables or dilutes......they just "fade" because somewhere genetically, the pigment gene they carry, isn't as strong as others.
Females are notorious for "fading" saddles, or "bitch stripes" along their backs.......it's pretty normal.

I only addressed this post to you, because you had asked a question about a dog in your training group.......
I hope that I was able to clarify that question?......at least a little.

I would like to see a dog that looks like this in the showlines.

Thanks, Robin. But it's not a fading saddle or a bitch stripe...it WAS that, but now it's a GONE saddle.

Good to know about the color being decided ONLY at birth. I mean, I've registered litters and the puppies' colors, but frankly sometimes I wasn't sure if it should be changed later.
