I have never heard about that rule of thumb.
My puppies walk a lot longer than 10 minutes and are always healthy. Dogs are made for walking and need to walk. You will find out your puppies limits and how long he/she is willing to walk (not run) beside you as  you work with your dog. Return home before your dog reaches this limit.
WUSV has following categories for shows:
Jugendklasse (12-18 months of age),  Junghundklasse (18-24 months),  Gebrauchshundklasse (older than 24 months),

If you want to present your dog in "Jugendklasse" with 12 month your practice should start at least 8 weeks earlier. At SV shows dogs run on a show leash for at least 45 minutes, depending on the number of dogs attending, with interruptions for individual judging. In individual judging your dog has to stand for examination and you will have to show your dogs teeth to the judge. If your dog lunges after the judge your dog will be excluded.

I have attended many shows and endurance training is essential for dog and handler! Additionally, you want your dog to be of optimum weight. Jugendklasse and Junghundklasse includes GSD's that are not fully matured so there will be some leaner dogs in show, just they haven't fully matured.

Steve: I did not mean that you holding anything back. I am sorry if it came accross here. What i was trying to say is that, everytime i ask a breeder or handler here locally i get different responses on what needs to be done.

Oso: Yup i have sent the mail to you. And have attached the pics properly this time. Hope you like the little fella.

Thank you so much guys.

Will put the puppy pics soon.

OH my, i was a bit concerative..........

Walk around your house and garden with the lead before you venture outside. Make sure she can cope and behave whilst walking beside you - if she's difficult in the garden it's not a patch on what she'll be like outside!

With regards to age... you don't say how old she is! She can go out when her course of vaccinations is complete. Young dogs have very delicate bones and joints and she should be out for no more than 5 minutes for every month of her life, so if she's 4 months old, 20 minutes is the absolute maximum. She might be exhausted with as much as that. Don't be tempted to overdo it.

When they are young, socialisation is much more important than exercise. A pup cannot be "too fat", they put all their resources into growing so if you exercise her too much her development could suffer (she might not have as good bones or joints) and she will lose weight.
________________________________________________________________________________________
The rule of thumb is to walk a dog for around 5 minutes per 4 weeks of its age. So a 12-week-old pup may only need around 15 minutes of exercise, while a 20-week-old may be happier with 25 or so minutes of exercise.
However, these are only rough guidelines, as it also depends on how much playing your puppy gets at home. If you are playing with your puppy a lot, then you may need less exercise.

And bear in mind that if your puppy seems to be lagging behind you and you need to drag it on its lead, then it is getting too tired. Too much walking can damage its bone growth - so be careful!_______________________________________________________________

General rule of thumb is 5 mins for every month of their age. Off lead is good so they can go at their own pace :-)
___________________________________________________________________

Puppies do not need to be walked for as long as adult dogs. The amount of exercise needed for a puppy will depend on its age and the breed - whether it is an active breed or less active breed. Puppies can develop hip and joint problems when they are older if they are over walked as puppies.

To calculate a very general guideline for walking, walk the pup for 5 minutes for every month of its age. For example a 4 month old puppy will be 5 minutes X 4 months, which equals 20 minutes.

See how your puppy reacts during and after walks - if he seems to get very tired and lags behind it is probably too much for him. If, however, he is very active on the walk and at home then he may need a little more.

I had a puppy that I walked much more the the rule of thumb at an early age, at 8 months I had prelims done and they were graded as "mild".....

I re-thought the idea of exersize and cut way back on walks, and instead encouraged lots of swimming, and shorter sessions of playing fetch (runnung full out). It worked.

At 25 months, her hips were certified as "good".
