What is so maddening about this is that often people put the dog at 5mo or so down to stop it's "suffering"!
Again many vets do not guide the desperate dog owner properly. That is why you must educate your self thoroughly before you make any dramatic decisions. You are the ultimate decision maker and you are the one ultimately responsible for your dog. Not your vet! When my dog is sick by the time I am making any kind of decisions I know about the problem as much as possible. Often more then my vet since I also look into recent studies and so on.
However people are lazy, to read, to study and to do the relevant research. And these days it is so easy considering that we have Internet. It is right there in front of our noses! I remember back then me going to libraries and going through index card files!!! To get an info was sometimes one or more days event.
For example I am selling excellent book on my website on hips. I am making only less then $5 on it and I advice people to buy it and read it here on classifieds or even here on different threads. And believe me I am not doing it for the money. However I have not sold one(!!!) (this) book over the Internet. Some of my students get them, but it is more my pressure then their interest.
Learning hurts! But it is rewarding.
Ask thousand people and then make your own decision.
My favorite Chinese proverb.
