Hello BYB,
Everyone has to start somewhere!!!  It is where you end up that matters...

It is you who are calling yourself a Back Yard Breeder thats up to you, What i call a Back Yard Breeder is a person who owns Dogs and Breeds and Sells the Pups from them but does not have registered Health Certificates Hips Elbows and DNA on the Dogs being bred from
Forget the work attitude although it is good to have it because it tests a dogs Stability and Temperament whist under a bit of Pressure, but Clarified Joints are a Must, First and Foremost and to be honest they is not one reason why a GSD owner does not get them done officially unless they are sure the Joints would not pass the test
However What will i be called on here if i ever breed from Izzy Bitch, when she gets her ScH 1 - or 3 and is Korclassed, I expect the same as you call yourself

blah blah blah. if you breed without getting hips and elbows certificates for both parents you are horrible. if you breed parents without first testing their workability, then you are horrible according to the gsd founder and smart people.

Steve, I think titles, breed survey and h/e certifications move you up well beyond being called a BYB and into the classification of one who is concerned enough with the breed to establish these minimum requirements.

Your idea of a BYB breeder is about the same as here in the U.S. Usually, it is someone who has found an easy way to add a little extra money to the bank account every year.

Good for you. Everyone has to start somewhere. Anyone who breeds has been a so called back yard breeder, more power to you and keep the pups coming

THERE ARE PLENTY OF PUPPIES AT www.petfinder.com.
No one needs a pat on the back for producing more.

I am saddened and angered, both by what the OP wrote and some of the responses. At the very least anyone breeding dogs should have proper health checks and temperament testing done on their dogs. There is absolutely no excuse for doing anything less.

grammashorty, Why are you continuing to produce puppies in a bad economy where people are surrendering pets daily? Every puppy you produce possibly takes away the life of a GSD needing a "pet" home. Also, as mollyandjack mentioned, you might want to look at petfinder.com and see the endless number of GSDs on there that need homes, not to mention the thousands that are being put to sleep everyday.

Now, I got that off MY chest!!!

The whole point of Breeding and this should be paramount to anyone who loves the Breed, and that is to try and better the breed by selective breeding, not slap happy breeding's of untried Dogs at anything but worst of all is Breeding without Certified Joints
For me there is absolutely no reason for anyone breeding Dogs not to have them not done correctly
Sorry' there is The cost comes into it and that is where it cuts into the Profit Margin and that is a NO' NO for some but no matter how well they put the excuses into print they are poor breeders and to my mind are not at all bothered about the breed only of the money the dogs make

Good for you Steve1, I totally agree.  There are enough breeds out there, I am saddened every time I look at these on-line adds that help irresponsible people sell there dogs.  What is wrong with people today????
