Ultimately its down to the puppy buying public what we want from a dog that really will make the difference. The GSD breed needs more publicity in what is desired from a true GSD in the first place.

If I am looking for a pup if i want a dog for pet, i will want a pup that comes from parents with good sound temperament and health first and foremost. And i believe this is the basic thing the breed survey is trying to acheive? ( if thats not correct someone please tell me ) if the breed survey can become a standard test of that great. I would then want a basic test for obedience and daily life stuff, which is where i think the BH would come into play.

If you want a GSD for work or sport then that is where the SCH qualifications should come into play. For now the GSD's in this country need to be able to reach that basic level. Obviously there will be more who can acheive higher, but in the UK most GSD owners are pet owners, you cannot deny that fact. They dont understand the fancy SCH qualifications, and really they probably wont want to. they just want a nice sound obedient family pet.

For me being a prospective breeder however, I would eventually like to see at least a SCH 1 become a standard of breeding quality along with all the relevant health tests breed survey etc. Because to me, a dog that can work is a true GSD.  I see SCH for me as a sport and hobby testing me and my dog. It's as much down to the trainer as the dog itself whether they can acheive that SCH 1. Dogs shouldn't be discarded just because they fail to acheive a SCH 1 because they could have a bad trainer, and not every breeder will have the money to fork out to pay for someone else to train their dog for them, and if there are people out there like me, who feel they want to do the training themselves, our lack in skills shouldn't be of detriment to the dog in question. Which is why i think a UK BH would be brilliant. It should be at a level where it tests the dog, but not too high a level that someone with some training ability cannot put their dog to.

I've kind of lost my way a bit with what i was saying here and i apologise, but i agree with Videx that the working right now should be put behind the temperament and health of the dogs. That is the main focus right now and eventually working parts can be put in once there are enough dogs obtaining the right temperament and health.I see a great lot of progress here. It may not be moving as fast as some would like, not all of us have access to qualified trainers with SCH and GSD knowledge. We need more of those aswell, but its a step in the right direction
