Chaos is really enjoying living on the farm.  He's now an outdoor/indoor GSD.  Equipped with a underground fence, he lives in a 30 x 40 foot polebarn with his come and go as he pleases doggy door!  We will be building our house on the property in the next year.  We have tried bringing him back to the apartment for over nighters and he absolutely hates being inside now.  I never would have thought it!!!!  He's king sh*t on the farm and that's the way he likes it.  He's got a nice big pond to swim in and watches the wild life 24/7.  Bobbys' brother calls him Sir Barks A Lot!  He barks at the dark all night long, lol and then sleeps during the day....  The deer come in herds and stand there 100 yards away from him and he only sits and stares at them.  Never barks and never chases.  Gotta love that.  Any way, he's doing great.  He just turned 5 years old on May 8th.  We also just got him nuetered 3 days ago.  Bobby didn't want him going after any of the female coyote around the farm!

Neutering a five year old dog will make it stop going after any of the female coyotes around the farm???????  Really, do you think so?   surprise   I didn't know that neutering also took away the dog's olfactory senses.

Well, he won't be able to manufacture any coy-dogs, so i'd say that is a plus.

Am I understanding that this dog is being left on a farm no one lives on to stay alone with just an under ground fence?  Any caretakers or anything?

GSDNewbie, no he wasn't left behind with no supervision, lol.  I would never do that to my dog!  Bobbys' dads' house is right there and they can see what he's doing at all times.  We go see him every day and spend plenty of time with him.  He is doing wonderfully with his underground fencing system.  When we are there each day, the collar comes off and he roams free with us where ever we go.  So no, he is not left alone with out a care giver.  He has 3 huge bowls of water that are checked every day to make sure that he always has something to drink.  And he has 3 bowls of food filled full time, but he isn't a big eater at all.  He's just fine though.  No worries.

Is he left out there as a watch dog? Is he a pet? If so why leave him out there?

I live in a rural area and I am constantly confused about the so called caring owners of dogs who leave them at the farm during the week (with plenty of food and water so they say) and then only return the following weeknd to tend to them and their other stock again.

Why have a dog at all?

Why judge when you don't have all facts??  And obviously didn't THOROUGHLY read the owner's post?  angry

He is NOT alone, and SW visits him every day after work. The only difference between Chaos and your average dog that belongs to a couple who works full time is that Chaos is free to run around outside if he wishes (with in the area of the dog fence). One concern with these fences is that another dog may come onto the property and attack him, but SW's father-in-law also lives on the property, and can step in to help if this happens.

BTW, Chaos does have quite a few titles, through the Continental Kennel Club. He's not 'just a pet'.

My appologies, becoming grumpy in my old age and the cold of winter I have reread the OP, it sound likeChaos will have full time company in the near future.

The area where I live there are many Weekend farmers who live in the city and leave their dogs on the farm to guard and watch over the stock and fend for themselves all week, they only return to check the stock and dogs at the weekends.
