I started out going to reply to this as I trained with Steve for years when he was in KY, but almost didn't because of all the personal stuff going on. It doesn't belong here and I am betting that this... Julz does not want her life and times spread all over the world either!.... That being said I still had to voice my humble opinion..  I drove 5 hours each way once a week, because their club took a dog for what the dog IS and did NOT ask to see it's pedigree before working the dog ( to pre-judge the dog). I was sick and tired of WL trainers being biased against show dogs across the board with out even giving them a chance. That club spent the time show ring training as well as Sch training AND was completely honest with what they saw or didn't see in the dog's potential whether it be SL OR WL!!!! Previous to that, I spent 4 years in a top nationally known and world competitor's WL club and my SL commanded their respect. They came to respect him and some have even admitted that if he hadn't been my first SCH dog we COULD have done well in competition! The dog HAD IT with style! Steve saw this right from the start..... w/o looking at the pedigree! He judges the dog for the dog, and there are very few problems that he can not solve... except if the problem has to do with the handler. MANY famous people and dogs have come to Steve to help work out problems and they have been successful, if the handler is SERIOUS about working a dog in the right way. I've seen now famous dogs come to Steve because they could not pass the courage test in a sieger show... and watching them, they sure WERE screwed up!! Steve was able to correct the poor training and other issues and some of the now famous dogs are known for their good bite work because of STEVE! Steve could see this after just working the dog once. Now if he thinks the dog doesn't have it, he is not afraid to tell you it's a crappy dog and don't waste your time. Steve is a VERY serious trainer and has very little patience when people are told repeatedly to do or not do something and then don't/do do it. He is for the dog and making the dog as good as it can be. Handlers that don't learn get in the way of his desire to bring their dog to the level he sees it being able to achieve. Yes, he is VERY harsh, but it gets the attention of those who truly desire to make their dog all it can be, AND it gets rid of those who are not serious. How many trainers have you seen, that "stroke" the handlers and very sweetly encourage them, when they know the dog can not achieve anything. They are just taking the handler's $. Yes, his language is terrible, but it is always directed at correcting the handler. Yes, it could be done in a "nicer" manner, but would people pay as much attention? Yes, I felt the brunt of his wrath, just as these people have, but they know as well as I do that it's NOT PERSONAL, it's all for the good of making the dog and handler what they need to be to achieve their best. Why do you think the military trains this way? Because it makes you stand up and fly right! It's all about not screwing around, being serious and being the best you can be. Steve can get in your face one minute.... you correct yourself and do it right.... and he's right there lavishing just as hearty praise on you as harshness the previous minute. It's just plain how he is... a passionate trainer! That also goes for the helpers he's trained! Those that took the passion correctly, learned and corrected themselves, have gone on to be national helpers themselves and have nothing but good to say about Steve. Those that could not handle his "heat" jumped out of the fire. If you can't handle the language or the style then go to someone else and good luck with them!
Debby, Apollo, Yentel and Ebonezer thank you Steve!

This will hopefully be my last post to this ridiculous thread. Donna, please heed the warning from Admin. NO ONE In our group ever did anything but try to help you, and that includes Steve. I don't know what your motives could possibly be for all of this, but you have clearly chosen the wrong venue for your vindictive behavior. You have zero credibility, and the vast majority of people see this mess and you for what it is. A very disturbed person seeking attention, who needs help. As for people in our club training at other clubs... we encourage people to go and get other opinions and views. That is nothing new. As for logistics.. we are in the Washington metro area, and there is definitely not a shortage of clubs to choose from. Anyone can train wherever they want. Move on, everyone else has. Theresa

I've trained with Steve for over a year and he is a top, top Schutzhund trainer who puts his heart and soul into every dog and handler. It's not usual for people at the top of their profession to become frustrated (and use tough language) when the people they're training don't listen to them or don't understand yet. But it's not personal. The important thing is that Steve never gives up on anyone or any dog and everyone - let me repeat that, everyone who trains with him makes progress and every dog who leaves the field carrying a sleeve after a training session has its tail wagging. This attempt to hurt an excellent, dedicated trainer and good guy has failed. Let's move on.  Mary

If this dog trainer is abusive at home or in a personal relationship, then that woman should be on her way to the DA and in an abuse WOMANS center.

NOT on this dog forum...

IF she cannot get the guts to go report it, then some of you above posting about it, make the trip and take her with you...

Putting that kind of PERSONALS here is bad for the dog world..I personally know of one trainer who is ever as good as this Steve , and he did same kind of harshness and he did abuse his wife..BUT SHE  went into a BATTERED  womans center and it got solved

FRIENDS do not let FRIENDS continue to be harmed..IF this is true about this man, then the ones who have proof, take it to the proper authorities

NOT HERE>

I would never  judge his life by rumours, but by his dog success.

do SOMETHING ABOUT THE other issues. Reduce the stigma of abuse by reporting it to the right place.

"Previous to that, I spent 4 years in a top nationally known and world competitor's WL club..."

By "club" do you mean a group of people training together or a big stick used to hit the dog to teach it to out?  ;o)

Wow is right!

Steve needs to go check his stove top,
it wouldn't surprise me if he found a bunny simmering away!

This whole thing reeks of a scorned woman.
(No offense to the level headed ladies here)

Unreal.

I'm only suggesting, Deb, that if such extraneous measures are necessary to get a dog to do that which by its breeding it should be predisposed to do naturally, perhaps it isn't a good representation of the breed regardless of the accolades it has received.  Just sayin'...

We've talked about this and are pretty much on the same page.
