Debby, I thought one of your pics looked like an AKC win. I think that dog would do well at AKC shows. Yes, the AKC shows do run on schedule, no waiting around for the judge or the dogs. If you snooze, you lose LOL.

Does the dog pictured in this thread have a straight back:

What affect would higher withers have on the dog's appearance?"
Crickets? All working line dogs have straight backs; right?
How about this dog...banana back?

I don't think so, Keith.

And for those of you too lazy to click on the link I posted back on page 1, to answer the OP's question:
correct topline:
roached topline:
If you want to know the REAL reason this all came about, please click on the link to Fred Lanting's site that Rik posted. Two brothers did indeed have the power to change the way the GSD looks, and which dogs win the trophies in the show ring. There is NO OTHER REASON FOR IT. If you ask Fred, who is an authority on the GSD and on orthopedic problems, he will tell you it does NOT make the back stronger.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a kennel to look after...

I think where we really differ is in degree. Not saying people shouldn't dislike / even be
"appalled" by / any spine which is capable of being flexed by stance into an extreme ...
even when that is a largely ILLUSORY effect (I have seen pink elephants too but they
disappeared when the booze ran out). Its just this 'holier than thou' attitude that ticks
me off.
Because we don't know that this is a SERIOUS PROBLEM in any case - you don't answer
the point I made about lack of evidential linkage to disease. I take Ibrahim's point
about the opposite effect - weak saggy backs might indeed in some cases be "life threat-
ening" but, look, the UK fancy went through 3 decades when that abomination was in the ascendency yet it didn't 'kill off' the breed.
