I think you can get a good sport dog or family dog or real working dog with Tom in the pedigree. I think when you start line breeding and back massing on Tom....I think you are moving in a sport direction. But that is just one opinion.

Yes, I have seen some 3-3 on Tom, very nice sport type dogs. But I would go back to something more versatile afterwards. The females are FAST, Drivey, easy to handle and they need to be taken to calmer, more laid back more civil males with good structure.

I think it can be still utilized unless somebody starts taking 3-3 on tom to another line bred dog on Tom.. that is rather nonpurposefull. (is that a new word)

Nonpurposefull = counter productive

Not necessarily, it depends on the breeding pair, and at one time linebreeding like that was quite common in the pedigrees of recognizably great producers like Held Ritterberg, Ingo v Rudingen, Ex v Reidstern.  These were futher linebred on linebred dogs, Rolf v Osnabrucker land, Utz v h Schutting, Erich v Grafenwerth (2-2 Hettel Uckermark, 3,5,5-3,5 Roland Starkenburg (2-3 Hektor v Schwaben, 3-4,4 Horand v Grafrath).

We should never disremember, this breed was built on "a lot of backmassing", he he.

funny discussion, Tom got his name and fame by winning a sport event, and by producing dogs that are able to do the same, and now people complain that he brings to much sport

by Gustav on 23 July 2012 - 14:07

@ Duke.....I understand your point....lol, but in all fairness I think there are two types of IPO people. There are them that the sport is the goal and breed for the sport. Then there are those IPO people that breed GS for utility and use the sport as a proofing place. I think the utility people sometimes have a problem with the narrower focus of the breeding of sport type dogs. So if you breed for the sport....then more Tom may be better....if you breed for utility then more Tom may be seen as not as good.

I just did a 3-4 linebreeding on Tom. Puppies are 14 weeks now. http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=1345576

Gustav, I breed for utility and use utility as proofing place and  dont use sportwinners for breeding, not so complicated at all, if you want sport/points dogs, select your breeding material from sportdogs(generally speaking)
only if I breed my female to a super LE or PP dog, they are not famous, so they wont help me to sell the pups

@ Duke......I dont disagree with you....LOLOL

Side note all of my Bomber pups are crossed with Czech blood.... still do not consider them hard dogs (For all that say cross out with Czech lines)
Guess it is in the definition of ??
My Fado v.d. Lutter g.daughter I consider hard
I guess people have a vast opinion of what is hard and what is sport
