most of the older trainers prefer the Gs as a breed for working, whether it is nosework, hunt work, or man work. But their are so many health/ temperament issues with the breed, they don't have time to take three years to find out if hip, elbows, drives, hardness, etc are going to work out. So Malinois is the expedient choice.

Do you see Mals breeders going in the same direction as GSD? I get the impression they are often using GSD's as a reference point as to what DOESN'T work. The GSD authorities, on the other hand, do not appear to be providing a proper solution to the issues Gustav mentions which is ending with Mals replacing GSD's all over the place, there does not appear to be a turning point.

I live in Mexico, both police and military are using Mals/Dutchies almost exclusively. Given our current situation, if you want a dog to protect your home and family, why not get the same dog that the military uses? People select dogs just by watching what the military use (in Mexico, military is more visible to civilians than they might be to other more civilized countries).

It seems to me GSD authorities really need to do MORE to turn the ship around. Then you read about "stick pressure" being used rather than actuals hits. Are you kidding me? I'm training the dog in my avatar for IPO1, I love the little guy but a "working" test where a 7 kilogram dog can pass cannot be seriously be taken into account as a test for a test which is meant to stop non-worthy dogs from being bred.
