not sure why that went sideways

by troopscott on 16 July 2012 - 00:07

From applying what I know about thoroughbreds to GSD  she has a good thick chest, thick bones in her legs, and her pasterns look good.
One question I had was this.  The breeder said from the moms previous litter it took 6 months for the ears to fully stand on some of them.  They discussed having me tape the ears at the club yesterday.  Any thoughts on this?  Hers stand some esp when she hears something like the doorbell ring they prick up.  Couple things they discussed as to why they havent stood yet is teething and a thick chest which I didnt understand but whatever.  Any thoughts on taping or gluing the ears early
Thank you guys again for opinions and help

How old is your pup now troopscott?
I'd make sure she had plenty of raw bones to
chew on, you can also supplement her diet with
a little Knox plain gelatin powder mixed in with her
food too. A couple spoons of cottage cheese or
yogurt mixed in can help too. Is this a repeat breeding?
Or a different male this time with this female?

Not a big fan of taping, I suppose if it looks like they are
not going to stand on their own I would, but, the dog
should never be bred if she has soft ears. It will pass on.

It seems to be more common in WG showlines to have a
softer ear, and they can take forever to stand, but many
showline pups tend to be 'loosy-goosy' in many ways, and
take what seems like forever to tighten up.

Encourage lots of chewing, it helps build those back
jaw muscles that they use to pop the ears up.

When a pup teethes, their ears can go down again, but,
normally, if a pups ears are up by 6-8 weeks, they will stand.

Congrats on your puppy!
