I am sorry about your incident the GSD is protective of  the pack in most part.. But the dogs must be trained in personal protection .. My Adicus will die for me and my family he's very hard in PP .. My advice get a gun and a working line GSD and have him/her trained by a good trainer. Good Luck

Police officers are recruited from a cross section of society, trained and when experienced after around 5yrs are eligible to able for a K9 job. They get given a dog and a 12 week course, they are paid to be cops, make judgments and deal with crime and social issues. Dog Handling is just that, they are primarily patrolling cops, no different to a Navy Seal with a $100k Malinois, he/she is highly trained specialist with "an extra piece of kit".
The trouble with "expert" handlers, is the same as super fit cops or cops that are expert martial artists they are so wrapped up in there own worlds that they often make underperforming "cops". Who should get the job; the best dog person or the best cop?
I would argue that apart from a very small group of European Countries such as Holland & Germany in general there is little culture of working dogs in the western world, these skills have all been lost. We should all be careful about the rose tinted glasses we seem to view the so called real dogs of the past.

In terms of the comments about cops handling real dogs what Chief needs a dog that he can't train properly, many forces don't allow pinch or e-collars. A dog that every time it engages it shreds a suspect, dead funny on YouTube until its your son thats "p*ssed up" for the first time and finds himself in the wrong garden. As a cop you are in constant fear of being filmed and recorded; trial by internet and your Chief will drop you like a stone for political points, real dog men need to pay the mortgage.
K9's are best judged by those who operate in that grey world, where bodyarmour is needed primarily inside the station!
