"Now I wonder if they will attack if someone kicks my door down."

If someone kicks your door down knowing there are two GSD's in the house, you need a gun.

I was warned that you guys are tough! That's OK; Better than being heavily moderated. lol, no, I won't change my user name, that's a good one though.

A lot of you are mistaken about the liability issue regarding an intruder or attacker in one's own home. Michigan is a "stand your ground" state that allows unconditional lethal force in one's home. This fight did not require that level of force but my dogs had every legal right to defend me in this situation. Animal control would have checked the rabies certificates and put the dogs on home quarantine.

I am a business owner and have been targeted in the past. My dogs have kept burglars out of my home twice in 30 years.

There are other security measures in place.

I do not wish to discuss gun ownership on the internet.

I think the dogs were confused since they knew this person.

One question though. How would you expect a pair of German Shepherds to react either to a burglar trying to enter the home with no one home, or to unknown intruders kicking in a door with people home? I really thought that my dogs were my first line of defense to at least allow me time to get to a weapon. IMO, if an unknown person tries to enter my home, German Shepherd Dogs should attack. That's just one reason that I don't have Golden Retrievers.

Thanks for the replies. Good or bad, I can take it.

Lots of good news in this story.

You found out can take a hard shot to mouth and still give fight. Thats good news

You found out why... most, don't hangout and drink with drunken ex-acquaintance's who are unstable while drinking. Good news

You found out your dogs wont support you in dumb descsions you make. Good news.

You found out why your brain and animal instincts are more often then not better then guns and dogs in a fight! Good news

You relearned why he is an ex in the first place. Good news

You will hopefully findout that the disappointment you have in your dogs for not protecting you should really be disappointment in yourself for putting your dogs and yourself in harms way, by keeping company the likes of your ex. That will be good news. For you and them.

Thats a whole lot learning in just a few minutes worth of..... wrong choices. All good news!

an untrained dog is like a roll of the dice.  will they? won't they? every dog will bite, it is just a matter of what that dog's trigger is.  fear, protection, self protection, anger, territory.....  training removes many numbers from the dice and makes their actions more predictiable.  but there will always be variables out of your control that will be continuing factors.  thus the dice remains but with fewer numbers.  training brings out the best in any dog.  in their personality as well as their behavior.

What type of training do you do with your dogs?   Have they been raised as PETS?  If you haven't formally trained the dogs - why would you expect them to do this?  Furthermore, the fact that you didnt praise them and say "no" to them because you didnt approve of their behavior is about stupidest thing I think I have ever heard..............They were clueless what you were even talking about  - of course I am assuming your dogs have no formal training in protection because you "thought" your dogs would just be protective of you........You obviously havent put them in the situation to really know..........well up until now.........

If you have also had them as pets - you probably have supressed the "bite" in them.

Is any of this true?  Please let us know if you have trained these dogs to protect or if they have been raised as pets.

Did this ex break into your house this time, or did you let him/her in willingly? Do the dogs know this person at all or is it a total stranger? Have the dogs been exposed to altercations, albeit not to this degree, previously between you and said ex or you and others? I'm guessing that they have seen chaos in the house on more than one occasion, and did not find this incident totally out of the norm. Dogs are not mind readers. Don't expect any dog to have the good judgement to make up for your lack of it. Theresa

Just basic obedience training. They are my beloved pets that do double duty in protecting me & my home. I love my dogs very much and they have never received anything worse than a slap to the rump, and I mean a slap, not a smack.

I know that the dogs didn't understand me in saying no but I praise them heavily when they do what I want and expect. I just didn't know what to do with them. I didn't scold them. I just didn't smother them with love at the time. I do believe that these intelligent dogs not only like being talked to but that they do pick up a lot through tone of voice, certain key words and the general mood of the master.

Yes, I took a nasty punch and I am 58 years old and not used to that! Yes, this person is out of my life now. He was a long time friend who has deteriorated due to personal issues.

Most of all I am very glad that he did not harm my dogs.

(I would haved loved it had they bit him good though....had to say it!)

It's not a pet's job to protect you, that is ridiculous

My pup will bark if she see's something approaching that she's unsure of, so she may act as a bit of a deterrent when she's full gorwn, but she is extremely people friendly and I would not really want her to be any other way.

Sounds like you did a great job socilizing your dogs though  :P

I have a seven year old female here that has not had protection training either sport or police, I guarantee you, if you hit me on my property and she read me as mad or scared....she would bite you!
