Minette, It is so encouraging to hear from someone like yourself who after reading the stories of dogs with Epilepsy and lines that produce it will do research before buying your puppy, that makes it all worthwhile  sharing the experiences of living and caring and sometimes, sadly losing a dog suffering from Epilepsy.

We have made some headway regarding the Kennel Club and what they are willing to do for those of us that have or have had a dog that suffers from Idiopathic Epilepsy.
Chris Hazell (GSD Breed Health Co-ordinator) spoke to Bill Lambert yesterday and he has agreed that more needs to be done but in order to move forward he needs a Vet's letter confirming a diagnosis of Idiopathic Epilepsy and also permission from your Vet to use the letter to accompany each pedigree submitted to him by Chris Hazell, the more dogs from the same or close lines affected by Epilepsy the more he is willing to do to try and prevent lines from continually being used. If anyone has submitted their pedigree to Chris Hazell or is thinking of doing so please go ahead. but if possible have a talk with your Vet and see if you area able to provide a Vet's letter. If this is not possible in your case, please still pass on your pedigree and information on an affected dog, as every picture tells a story, and the more information we have the better the picture.
Here is Chris Hazell's e-mail,and phone number

Good work Margaret.

Linda,
Thank-you but to be honest I only paid lip service, Chris met with Bill Lambert and was able, with permission from the dog owners, to present Pedigrees with problem/related lines to him, and explain in detail  about the epilepsy in the lines. The need for the dog owner to produce a Vet's letter is vital, as the Kennel Club cannot do anything without it, personally after talking with them, we really do need a Law to be brought in to govern breeding, the problem is how to get the government to take notice.

That is really positive news.

My understanding is that the KC are very much against government legislation, as are most breeders. So, if this is their position it is in their interest for THEM to take the necessary action otherwise the government should and will (DEFRA) step in and legislate if the KC continue to be so ineffectual. So it is in the KC's interest to stop sitting on their hands and take action. Maybe there is a confluence of events that finally is working in our favour.

 Abby,
We agree, possibly this will force them to do "something" meanwhile, the more Pedigrees of affected dogs along with a Vet's letter gives those fighting against epilepsy more ammunition to take to the  KC table.

There are many more dogs suffering from epilepsy there are many more dog owners who know what they should do, but are still very apprehensive, they need to be encouraged to share their information and know that there are people who are trying hard to make a difference, that the information they share is not all in vain, sadly you cannot always rely on the Breeder for support and to share important information.
Epilepsy is not going away, not when lines that have Known Producers are still being used and advertised so blatantly, no one is above the law, but unfortunately in this situation there is no law  to answer too and that needs to change.
