I have a 21 mo working line female GSD.  She is a good dog.  Well behaved.  Good watch dog.  Faithful.  Obedient.  She has drive...a lot of drive.  Good with my kids.  Good with people when properly introduced.  She doesn't go well with most of the dogs.

Today, I was outside in my backyard and my dog was in the yard.  A small kid was walking across the street and my dog ran right across the street at the kid like if it was a threat and started to bark at the kid.  I almost had a heart attack.  I called her she came back right away.  The kid was ok just a little bit afraid.  But I was really mad at my dog.  I don't think she would have bit the kid but she never went out of the yard but today she did.  To bark at a small kid.

I guess the main thing to do is to never let her outside when I can't see her.  I just needed to share what happened because I was so mad at my dog and what could have happened to the kid.

In your opinion, was it a training issue ?

IMO its a dog comprehension issue.   Unless you have a fence,
you don't leave any dog outside unsupervised.  She didn't have
to run out; the kid could have walked in.  Either way not a good
recipe.  101.

You're right to be concerned about what could have have happened to the kid.  Just because she didn't bite him/her today, doesn't mean she won't and keeping her on a leash is a small inconvenience compared to the other possibilities.

I am surprised that kid didn't pee his pants like I would have if a strange german shepherd came running and barking at me.

Verhera..is this the first time she has done this?

She just lost her priviliege to be off leash outside beyond your fenced yard;  keep her on a leash.  Nan

Minicus, it's the first time she does that.  My kids have friends and she is always well behave with kids and people when properly introduced.

She is ALWAYS off leash.  We go for walks off leash but I carry one just in case.  If a dog walk in the street in front of the house, she stays inside the yard but advise that he better stay in the street.  When a stranger want to come in the yard, he can't until I tell the dog it is ok to let him/her come to me.

When I told that to my husband, he was surprised.  I don't know maybe it's because winter suits the kid was wearing with big hat.  Anyway, I will keep her on leash from this moment.

VerHera It seems that you have had issues before with her growling at children. I am no expert but if she was my dog she would not be put into any situation without me being able to control the out come! I would seriously take Keiths and Nans advice as well as Slam in your previous post! These guys/gals do know what they are talking about. You need to find help not only for her sake but also yours. Keep her on a leash

Yes you are right I just read a post from last April.  I feel like a perfect idiot.  I also feel like I don't have what it takes to own a girl like Hera.  I will call a friend of mine tonight to talk about it.  Thank you very much for your help.

How old is she?
