It's marketed as the 'Golden Middle', show-work crosses have been
done for a great long time.

As mentioned many times before in similar threads, these crosses may
produce a dog that is capable of some sort of work, be it K9 or sport,
the most result in 'mud', that is, die hard sport/working people don't want them,
and diehard show people don't want them. The liklihood of these 'crosses'
actually being able to produce better than themselves is slim to nil, and it takes
extreme dedication on the part of the breeder doing such a breeding to be able
to achieve any (if all) consistency.

What usually comes of such a cross is very sharpy and nervy dogs that are
not stable in temperment. Expecting a working line dog to 'fix' any lack of
working ability in a showline bitch is ludicrous, no dog can fix what is lacked.
You can also expect structure, size etc to be all over the map as well.

Now, with that said, if such a cross is done right, when it does produce a good
one or two, they are usually very nice dogs! But the odds of this happening are
greatly decreased if one needs too much 'fixed' in temperment and work ethic
in their SL bitch being bred to a WL male. Much better odds with a solid WL bitch
bred to a decent SL male, but still not odds I would bet on.

vk4- Sorry, but I believe you have no idea what you are talking about.
I really don't know what websites you are seeing that is doing serious, thought out breedings between show/work lines that are producing lab like shepherds for the pet crowd.
Yeah, I guess there are some that do and I would NOT take a dog for free from those breeders.
This litter I have coming up, I will be lucky if one dog turns out that would be happy to be a couch potatoe, or that a "pet family" will be able to live with.

Kitkat do you have a website?  I'd love to see your dogs!  My male is also 100% showline and will be breeding with a DDR female.  Like you say, he is as close to my ideal dog/GSD as I've been able to find.  I'm keeping back a male from the cross as I was researching a DDR dog as my next dog and then this opportunity came up so I can kill two birds with one stone, get my DDR dog *and* keep back a puppy out of my male to see how he produces.

OK Hora, you have gotten some ringing endorsements....give it a try and let's us know how you make out....I have seen this done many times and did it once myself.....and I think Workingdogz reflects what I have found and seen......but I am pulling for you.Wink Smile

VKGSD- I don't have a website, I am getting ready to put up a thread with some pics of my dogs.
I am very, very proud of my dogs, and I will tell you, I myself think that the showline/DDR dogs make an awesome dog.
When I put the thread up, I will put the pedigree of my dogs up.As I said, I have a litter due basicly any minute, (my poor girl is so fat), and I will put pics of the pups from that breeding.
My dog that is the narcotics detection dog is from show line, DDR mix.

CMathis, I would support what you say of Kirschental. The best Showline worker I have ever seen came from that kennel.

"vk4- Sorry, but I believe you have no idea what you are talking about."

err my response is you have no idea what YOU are talking about.

i only believe what i see with my own eyes and have had more than gsd breeder on my doorstep to do photoshoots of their wl/sl cross working stock to you know prove they are working dogs. involves a dog either in fear of it's life standing next to sheep eating grass or a dog running aimlessly like a maniac splitting up stock or a dog just mildly confused either way they would all be shot by any self-respecting farmer, and what appears next photos on breeder web-sites of their gsd herding!!!!! i now just order these folks off my property.

my decoy makes a living buying training and selling dogs to gov agencies, he is flooded with litters donated to him by wl/sl crosss breeders who want to claim bragging rights about their dogs placed into service to put on their websites, he sends just about every pup back and rejects almost all offers cos he knows it is a waste of his time. he has no breed preference either.

so yeah you keep spinning, i will stick with what i see.

There are a few people who do a Showline X Worling line Crosses...These people have a lot of knowledge of what they're doing...and why they're doing it...

There are breeders in Germany that also do it but they do it for a certain reason...To gain something...Not just to breed the two lines and hope for the best...

I think if you're going to do this that you should have a lot of knowledge of both bloodlines...So...In saying that...I think most people should just leave it alone...Just DO NOT DO IT!!!!

vk4- i was not trying to be insulting, I guess you have seen the other side of the "coin-toss",
This however is what I have seen, ( I guess I am a little partial being I have bred these dogs and receive the updates. This is not sport dogs, they have become "True Working Dogs"
    He is Showline and DDR,
That's cocaine in each packet, routine traffic stop,
This is after he found a couple hundred lbs of pot,
