VKGSDs

No, eddy, you are mistaken.  You cannot stack a dog with a roached back, extremely steep croup, or extreme rear angulation to stand like a moderate working line dog.  Your issue is with the dog's actual conformation and structure, not how the breed is posed for evaluating angles.  The point of the stack is to illustrate the differences in dogs.  If we could all change our dog's stacks and have different dogs every day then what would be the point of evaluating their structure?  When you stack a German shepherd, the front legs are set under the elbow and perpendicular to the ground.  The right rear foot is set under the dog, generally the toes fall between the knee and tip of the penis (if male) if you were to draw a line down.  The left hock is set perpendicular to the ground.  You can change your stack depending on venue and get a little variation but overall it's pretty clear how the dog is structured and you cannot totally change that with stacking.

a roach can be accentuated by the stack. djc pics are an excellent demonstration of this. My dog never shows a roach off leash, but put her in a forced stack and pull the rear leg up enough and it starts to show.

I myself do not stack my dogs with hocks flat on the ground.  I find it incredibly distasteful.  I present my dogs as balanced as possible

None of the hocks should be touching the ground in a stance....it is not natural! When I look at the GS Review of the pics of winners....I still see a lot of hock of that one hind leg touching the ground....and that was supposed to be the winning dog selected...Right????

BTW Hundmutter, the dog in your avatar is standing on four padsThumbs Up!

Gustav - yes he is - but he's not stacked either LOL - he 'stood' himself for the pic.

Presto! and he is standing on all four pads....why should stacked be any different...we should want to see the natural structure standing, to judge the dog...not the manipulated structure.....seems to me.

Seems to me that Laura's "stacked" picture of Bosco above (sable dog) is how the dog should be standing to be judged.  His structure looks thoroughly functional ( = beautiful !).  Not the unnatural poses that the showline dogs are forced into.

This pup is 4 weeks and is "stacked"....they do it naturally.

Here's an 8 week puppy in another natural stack.......
I thought this one would be coated, but instead it grew to have a beautiful plush coat.

no other breed is stacked like the GSD.............i was told they started doing it like that because the GSD is longer then talll and it suits that structure better...........

well i still dont see it..............just pose the dog in his natural stance............the early GSD were not posed like that........and there was nothing wrong with them???
