"There is no reason why a working dog should not look well - and there is no reason why a showline dog should not work well."

Exactly!!!! If ever I were to breed a litter, I would be sure to look at the entire aspect of each dog, becuase you are absolutely right. There is no reason a good workingline dog can't turn heads conformationally, and there is no reason a good showline can't do the work. I don't understand why people see the need to sacrifice one for the other, when it IS possible to have both!

Drago is a gorgeous dog... can't believe I didn't think about posting him myself. There isn't much at all that I would change about that dog (conformationally speaking... never met him so can't speak for temperment, etc.).

Without being "sneaky", google this dog ...
Some owners of the so called showline dogs start to rethink, too. Since there is the Universal WUSV trial, it makes sense for them to train their dogs for trials, too.

Ballack is a lovely example, Susie.  Now, THIS IS a 'great looking GSD' and he has
the qualifications and bite-work which go with it, Eddy.  What on earth can you find
wrong with a dog like him, with a topline like that, which isn't based purely on your own
aesthetics and prejudices ?

"rik eat your heart out!..............."

eddy, going to have to change my opinion of you. you have kept a pretty cool head.

my last pup was from these two dogs. both V, KKL1. what do you think of them.

lost her to complications of surgery before 1 year. I really don't "eat my heart out" over dogs I don't own. I get on a plane or in a car and go find one that I feel meets what I want in a GSD.

best,
Rik

Don´t confuse poor Eddy too much, Rik...Teeth Smile

I think it´s time for Eddy to tell us about himself....we are talking with him for months now but still know nothing about him...

I really try to understand you, Eddy, and in this case I want to know:
Where do you come from?
How old are you?
did you own and train dogs at one point of your life?
Why do you love German Shepherds?
Have you been in a club at any time?
Did you ever visit a show?

I don´t want to blame you - I grew up with working lines ( not even pedigreed ), and laughed about showlines for a long time.
The more I was involved in the breed itself I changed my mind.
Today I don´t judge about "lines" or "kennels" any more, but about single dogs and their ancestors.
If you raised and owned German Shepherds for decades, at the end you only want to know:

Is this dog healthy?
Is this dog able to work in MY special kind of work?
Do I like its character and temperament?
Do I like its outlook?
Do I want to spend a lot of my life with this special dog ( at best 10 to 14 years ) ?

Susie, I didn't see on your list ; does this dog represent the breed standard ?
Seems like too many people breed for their own preference now, with out keeping in mind the breed standard.

Joanro, you are right    ( for me standard is included in the question:" Do I like its outlook ?")
It´s in fact a very important question, especially for breeders: Does this dog represent the breed standard?
Thank you!

Thx, Joanro!
