Not all great dogs are champions .. not all champions are great dogs

by Blitzen on 18 April 2013 - 15:04

That's true, Bubba, but I still like to see owners training and titling their dogs. It gives them a better idea of their dogs weaknesses and strong points. If they decide to use that dog for breeding, that knowledge can be valuable in helping choose a mate.

Good post Blitzen. You know I have said on here many times I am no trainer. Yes I do train but in the time you guys have gotten 2-3 titles, I'mabout at the one leg stage. LOL  But the point I wanted to make is I am training Mauli for a CD and with the things she has already done and now formal OB, I have really learned my dog and her ins and outs.  And wow it's been a great journey so far. She turns 4 next week and hopefully we will have time to do a few more things before it's over...............I feel I am very fortunate to have gotten a girl like her..............

She will get her CD, Vonissk, no doubt about that.  It's always a challenge with bitches. One loses almost 3 months every year when they are in season and triple that when they are bred. We lost most of last year with the 2 breedings, the c-section, and the spay and I got lazy. Now we both need to get motivated Wink Smile

Thanks Blitzen. Oh yes I know we will. I am watching the pieces come together, the lights are on--the ball is definately in my court. Since she understands things in 3 languages, the thrill has been finding the right word to get the best results. !!!!!!!  So looks like it's going to be a mixture of English and Chickasaw. Oh and she doeslike the Fuss word.............I remember trying it on a recall and she liked it. We're not deep into heeling and all right now................sits, stays, downs, 6' off lead recalls, straight front sits---and doing them with relish.............oh no treats, all off lead, all done for praise. I sure couldn't have done this 2 yrs ago with her. Time off? Poor Mauli is just now getting coat back in--she looked shavedand awful..............

You're doing better than me, I have to use food rewards. Winnie Strickland never used food, she said it was demeaning to the dogs. She did things with GSD's that no one else has done, so I can't argue with success.

Don't let my boss read these posts. He might try this craziness with me.

Reward your dog with some high value treat (ball/toy/food) It's a beautiful thing when your dog learns that their hard work FOR YOU gets them a high value reward from you.

the look in my dog's eye when he knew he nailed an exercise and that the "yes" was coming is one of the things I miss most.

VKGSDs

My GSD has 17 titles and counting, KKL, and some other stuff that are not real titles (BH, AD, TT, HIT, CGC).  GSDs are super fun to cross train!

Andy Maly Vah was amazing, true GSD and able to title in anything from protection to dock diving.  RIP

by Blitzen on 19 April 2013 - 11:04

You can add the CGC to your dog's titles, VK. AKC now considers it a title.

Mike the reason I use no treats is this dog is way too smart, it will send her too over the top--I'll be going backwards--she'll want to only do things for treats. I already have her going places and doing exercises in different places and managing distractions really well--nope I think I'll stick with where I am..............
