Hund--

I have inside and outside dogs---- just to re-iterate

my point is simply if you provide for the dog its happy and healthy...

trust me i have had rescues- old. young , stupid, goofy, happy , hard, killers, etc........
as well as personal dogs with a wide variety of temperaments! My favorite dog was not a dog for the faint of heart. He was a dog many would have put down,,,, but in my opinion was a true working dog!!!!!! however i refuse to describe him as it would take a book to describe his upbringing and how he ended up and only a select few here would understand especially with my lack of effective communication with words through typing....

i like my old dogs to be close to me. but thats me humanizing on old dogs and generally sound dogs i can get away with this. As i am still a softy, however as we know those of us who are lucky enough to have sound dogs can do this.

--- economics happens. I lost my home 3 yrs ago. I made it work. because of the importance my dogs hold for me. I didnt let my dogs suffer any consequences based on my actions or ignorance but its up to the owner to provide everything previously discussed for a happy healthy dog. and trust me i made personal sacrifice to make it happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

health dictates different situations be they small difference or extreme differences. depends on the situation.

there are exceptions to any rule but the point of my post was for inside vs outside. I agree with your post and if direct would be happy to answer all of your questions.

Also i would like to add i like the way you asked questions and open the floor for debate with no insults or degrading statements!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reading all these posts, if I were a new dog owner, id go crazy. Everyone has their own way and it's fine. For me, I prefer to kennel but my current situation is Condo living. So my dog is in a 6x6 kennel in my living room.
He gets plenty of exercise, going swimming and long walks. He is a dog with a job but freedom comes though me. When i am home, he's out and when I am at work or out, he's in the kennel.
If i had a huge yard, he'd still be in a kennel. I never want him to believe his happiness can come without me. But this is how I was thought and how every breeder I respect does things.
Now when he is older, maybe 3 or 4 he may get more freedom or maybe not. Either way he's a very happy dog.
At the end of the day, as long as the dog is happy, that's what matters. Now I am younger than most of you but I have been training since I was 16yrs old. So now for 13yrs and just in the last 2yrs have I got into IPO. Most
I know in this kennel. So I think if you don't make it the dogs life, you're good, the dog is good.

Samael ,  thank you for your kind words.   This thred is obviously
attracting a lot of attention,  not so much in responses (not on the
'hot topics' list yet !) but have you seen the amount of viewings it is
getting ?  If between us all we can get so much interest in the discussion
going, each of the contributors will have done a very good thing, more
perhaps than we can know, in the lives of dogs.  Excellent !

Anthony, sorry you felt it was too much for newbies.  Not sure I
agree.  But anyway, I think if new owners read posts like yours, they will
see that there is a path for people in various circumstances, provided
that the needs of the dogs are met - and, as you say, that they remain
happy.  No one is trying to claim you must do things a certain way
but everyone is concerned that the dog's interests are addressed.
There are many dog-owners, and potential owners, who haven't thought
about it that way; if we reach a few of those and make them think about the
issues involved, surely that is a good thing.

A friend once said the very best home she ever found for a GSD was living in NYC at the Dakota.  That dog got tons of exercise and socialization. I think I wouldn't mind living there myself.

One of my recent GSD's was a 10 year old I agreed to give a retirement home. She was mainly an outdoor dog, but got a lot of house time along with her kennel mates. She was the most fabulous dog I ever owned. Settled in with us like she'd been there her entire life. Slept on the couch; we didn't care. Sadly she only lived another 5 months due to breast cancer that had spread to her lungs, but I believe she was a very happy dog those last 5 months of her life.  She didn't want us out of her sight, we couldn't leave her home alone, so she went with us everywhere. It was a big lifestyle  change for her. I think she really liked living as a house dog and enjoyed being an only dog. She was a Sch3 with many OB titles, she had just finished her UD 3 months before we got her and I showed her to 2 legs for her RN before she got sick. She was an active dog to the end. I still miss her very much, I will never have another dog like her. Talking about her is still difficult.

Thanks for the advice Steve, I'm training her for an AKC OB title.

What's the Dakota ?  A Hotel maybe ?

The old girl you write of sounds a little treasure,
great shame she did not have longer with you.Rose

The Dakota is the luxury hotel where the late and greatest ever song writer, John Lennon, was killed.

Yes, 5 months was not nearly enough time with her. I first saw her at NASS in 2005 and fell in love with her bite work. I guess it was meant to be that I met her owner and ended up giving her a retirement home. It still hurts............a lot.

Ah, sorry, yes, I vaguely remember now;  was more
concerned with Lennon's murder than where it happened.

O/T:  Blitzen I just tried to leave a reply on your 'disabled
veteran with assistance dog' post, but I can't get anything
to work on that particular thred for some reason.  The link
wouldn't work for me;  then when I was going to tell you
that, and express commiserations with the subject person
anyway, it wouldn't let me write anything either.  ???  Others
have posted.

hmm....for as much time as some people spend on here one would venture to assume that they dont have dogs at all....

by Blitzen on 12 August 2013 - 11:08

And yet here you are reading and commenting too, Lady Frost.
