by LBW27 on 22 July 2009 - 16:07

Hi everyone

I started a petition campaigning for the immediate suspension of the handler involved and for steps to be taken to prosecute him.  Almost 4000 signatures in support were sent to Leah Johnson who is the Chief Constables P.A and I received correspondence back from her.

The police officer in question HAS now been suspended from duty and steps are indeed being taken towards prosecuting him.  A huge thankyou to everyone for their support. I believe the public pressure helped make a difference.

Have seen it may be £20,000 fine, and a 6 month sentance. Am glad they suspended them just wish it had been sooner.

I think this is a tragic situation, and every one is calling for the maximum penalty, but lets remember, but for the grace of god goes I !!!!! Can we all remember, we may all be guilty of mistakes, did this officer willfully neglect his dogs, was it done with malice, how is this officer feeling about the outcome of such a mistake. Bill Owen

Bill this is a Professionally trained Police Dog Handler! Are we not always told that the Police are effectively never off duty? How do the dogs feel - DEAD.  Yes we are all guilty of being human and can make mistakes this person is no different than us - BUT when we do misdemeanours and are infront of the local constabulary why do they not take a kindly approach? And consider that perhaps we have made a mistake and how we feel and the fact that the thing we have done is not with malice?   Yes this is very tragic situation and one that was not done with malice or willful neglect BUT done by a PROFESSIONAL who should know better.  Hence the call for the maximum penalty.
