Sue, it's great to get firsthand info on a dog that was so well-known and influential. Thank you for that!

I also heard Jimmy worked him in all 3 phases of Schutzhund, but no one seems to have any proof of that. Do you know anyone who actually saw him do Schutzhund?

The strength in Phantom, in the history of the GSD in the US, is that a majority of breeders had jumped on the same train and were madly breeding Lance daughters back to Lance, or breeding daughter to son and then back again. Outcrosses to breed to Lance daughters and sons were needed. 1966/68 GV CH (US) Yoncalla's Mike, Caralon's Hein von der Lockenheim (Phantom's dad),  Bernd Vom Kallengarten,  Llano Estacado's Gengiswere used as an outcross. The problem that followed the whole wave is that there were very few outcross lines which had enough to offer to offset the failings in the Lance line, and still maintain the improvements breeders were seeking.  Sadly few breeders were knowledgable enough, willing or able to devote the generations of breeding to blend the lines carefully for the betterment of the breed's future They wanted a 1st generation Super dog.

The next huge bandwagon of breeding in the us was to Stutgart's Sundance Kid (Bear) and again the American breeders were all on the hunt to have one of his kids.  To share the glory...  In many ways it's the same thing that was happening just a few years ago in Germany.  The camps of Pro and Con about Vegas du Haut Mansard.

Each of the dogs I've mentioned had something (or many things) to offer... it's all in the uses the breeders make of it.

As to Phantom himself... he was drop dead gorgeous!  He looked good, was sound, and moved well.  He was a GSD in every aspect. Perhaps the last US bred dogs who could have done well in Germany as well.

Windwalker 18 that is one of the best summarization of Phantom I have ever read.

Bee, that quote from epigenetics, the epigenetic tags passing the parents experiences to offspring is what I was calling "Race Memory". I have been a believer in race memory for decades, but have been met with the same ridicule as on the other thread you referenced. Now there is a new name for inheritance race memory...epigenetic tags. ;-)

Casey James has caralon lines in his pedigree, as well as Dallas... I was supposed to show him. His gait is spectacular but he had UAP in both elbows, so that was that. To look at him you would never know he has a problem...  I posted this pic once before, many moons ago, but, here it is again...

I have been in GSD for many years.  I knew Scootie and a long time friend of hers, Judy Dean.  I have used

stud dogs from both of them.  Scootie was always really concerned with genetics etc and tried hard to breed

good dogs.  They also had Corgies which is a wonderful herding breed as well.  Not sure if she's still alive, I know

Judy passed away several years ago.  Caralon Kennels owned by Scootie and Pat was the place to go back then.

They did alot of breedings with Phantom, and then came Lance.  People starting linebreeding on him waaaay too

much.

I also forgot to mention when I first got into GSD many many years ago, I purchased American lines.  I've

bred to and bought dogs from Caralon Kennels and Tim Trapp of LeBarland Kennels. Thus, Caralon's Phantom v LeBarland.

Tim is no longer breeding last I talked with him he was still Showing dogs as a handler.

I knew Scootie, as well. She knew I was always very active in DM research. She was the one who sent me the report of the disasterous GSCA research Dr Coates did on GSDM, in which Dr Coates only dx 3 out of 24 GSDS, correctly, as having DM,  upon necropsy. She was not a fan..
