Susie,

I can see Memphis wasn't as strong as others, but can you explain to me how the judge gives the marks/grading ? In other words what did Memphis do or not do that his marks were lowest ?

Agree with susie re. the poor performances by some of the VAs (note: I DO think that on the whole the performance is improving).  Sorry, no excuses at this level.  Yes a dog can have a bad day but look at past videos of the dogs....

It was really nice to see the VA's actually do a controlled heel to the blind.  Clearly they are capable.

Schumann did not deserve a VA rating...Sabaat was on the edge and at best deserved a 3-3

FWIW from an AKC person, I get the impression that a helper can easily add or subtract from the scores  by the way he handles the sleeve when the dog first attempts to engages him.  I understand the protection phase is a vital part of the judging process, but wonder if it really tells as much about each dog as the scores indicate?  Before I get thrown under the bus, I'm not suggesting that has happened on any of these videos, just making an observation from the peanut gallery.

Also a few questions, how bad is it for the dog to keep looking back at it's handler? Why do some do that? I understand about being dirty on the sleeve, but how most of this bitework is scored puzzles me to be truthful. If a dog doesn't take a full bite becase the sleeve is moved away from him just as he engages the helper, what does that say about the dog?

Also, could the skill of the trainer be as vital to a good score as the dog itself? I'm not nearly as well versed in protection as most here, but I'd really have to be more convinced that the scoring of the bitework at a Seiger show should be a big factor to me when choosing a stud dog or a puppy. How many of the 3-3 dogs will be sold in the next months and how much will those scores influence the breeding programs and the prices of puppies? Might be some good buys in Germany this month?Devil Smile
