"Disclosure is the devil's advocate in breeding"

Ain't that the truth!!  I think a lot of these blue and liver and (God forbid!) white pups born to kennels with big-name studs just disappear shortly after birth.  What Smile

To some people, 'culling' does NOT mean selling a less-than-perfect pup to a pet home!

VK - because of these pictures...

- amazing eyes, amazing colors - and "little Mohawk" with his special kind of "combover"

Genetically unique and special ? I don´t know, but normally breeders don´t tend to show their "off" puppies - they normally "vanish" into pet homes, undetected and unseen. These beautiful pups are out of proven parents, Jen didn´t await to breed them, but she didn´t HIDE them.

Special for me? YES! I fell in love with this boy immediately ( I´m a woman ... Red Smile )

They're not genetically that unique, vk. What's odd/unusual is that it was about as much of an outcross as you can do in modern day GSD breeding and I got blue! More of a crazy lottery pick than genetic uniqueness. Just means a few people have hidden more than a few puppies. Their dam's sire is where she got it, and that's a very large breeder...big enough that they need 2 kennel names...there have had to be blues cropping up forever and just disappearing. In fact, their good friend, who I happen to know, told me that they were so surprised that "we" (Americans) can sell blues because they just drown them at birth. Well, drowning them at birth doesn't help anything because the recessives are still there! A pup needs two copies of blue to be blue, so LOTS of dogs out there carry for blue and people just don't know it.

It's really a shame because the temperament and structure was exactly what I wanted. Hoping to try something similar with 2 dogs who are similar in type, though not bloodlines (CZ&WG bitch crossed on an OLD SCHOOL sl male who's produced quite a few badasses), both a touch nastier than this pair...hoping for pretty serious protection candidate types with moderate aptitude for competitive sport, higher aptitude for patrol work, exceptionally stable temperament with family, and a hair calmer. I'll likely get pandas! LOL

Blue might be deemed as incorrect but I must admit those blue eyes look cool, seems like blues can always find a loving pet home to be in,nice to see any breeder be 100 percent honest to the public in what is showing up in litters. If there is perfect breeder that only produces perfect dogs 100 percent of the time for the type of dog I chase after someone please let me know about them, I,m thinking perhaps on a planet far,far away.

I just noticed looking at the older dogs with blue color that the eye color seems to turn more of a green color or  light yellow color am I looking at that correctly,on a normal color dog is their any hint in any way the dog could be carrying a blue gene like for example a sable dog with penciled black toes carrying the black recessive gene.?

Also what percent came out blue 1 in litter ?

Jenni, can you post a link to the next planned breeding that you were talking about?    I'm curious about that "old school" show line that you referred to.     I'm guessing that breeding will be an outcross?    If so, are either the dam or the sire linebred themselves in any way?     If you do the breeding, what colours are you expecting?

Bundishep, I think the eyes are a clue. At least in my litter, I have a pretty good guess who of the "normal" colored pups carries it. I would have to test them all to be sure, of course, but there are a few with pretty light eyes - Eirik and Eliot come to mind and I would be shocked if they didn't carry blue. It was a rather high percentage that were blue, too...part of what was so shocking. I didn't have just one- I had 3! There were 8 pups in the litter. 3 black and reds, 2 sables, and 3 blue (one sable and 2 blue and red).

Koots, the male is linebred but nothing really close (5,4 is the closest) and my female is not linebred at all. I've been gathering opinions about the male and gotten a resounding thumbs up as far as toughness in the ped, so he's not a fluke it seems. I noticed the kennel name was the same as the dog my mentor's wife competed in at USA North American championship 2 years in a row, and they didn't keep weak dogs. I did some more homework and am really thinking hard on trying it. It's always a little bit of a crapshoot with an outcross like this but the parents are very similar in temperament type and even physical type, although so different in pedigree. My plan is to keep something back and breed to my Capri pups. I want to keep the aggression on the higher end and add more calmness while solidifying structure. I'll PM you a link to the pedigree. I have a few ideas I'm tossing around but don't want to turn this into an ad. Wink Smile

Thanks Jenn that helps in case I guess some blues pop up of my own someday.

I don't mean to imply that some with "normal" eyes couldn't carry blue; I only mean that I *bet* my light-eyed pups DO carry it. Re-read my post and wanted to make sure no one thought I was alleging I could "see" who carried blue...
