Yes thats what I thought you meant.

Yes, please PM me a link if you wouldn't mind.    I think it's neat that you are crossing working and show - gutsy move that many can't or won't make - the camps seem so disparate it makes one wonder how the show lines could be improved if it isn't done more often by more breeders.    So you would take that outcross and bring it back into your lines then?

Yes. I wasn't intentionally looking for a showline- I just heard about this male, like I did the last, and he's produced some badasses (and the ped backs it up, according to people I trust on those lines) and I had the unique opportunity to not only see him, but to keep him in my own home, so I can really get a feel for who he is. I am planning to keep at least one of each gender for future breeding. I refuse to lose either the aggression or the structure. Gotta get creative! Teeth Smile

Good goals Jenni we need some badasses,I see far too many working dogs lack toughness, the tight-rope to walk I see is trying to keep dog aggression out for each other, while at the same time trying maintain solid strong nerves.

my question; is crossing to show/work lines to improve the looks of the working dog or the working ability of the show dog?

if yes to both then....

according to probaility theory this methodolgy is just as likely to create an ugly dog that can't work, just thinking out loud.

i would have thought the more effiecient approach would be to change the phenotype/conformation of the proven worker thru selection or select the strongest pretty dogs to breed to each other.

but hey i am no breeder.

Not sure where you got your idea of the supposed "goal" vk, as it's neither. Thinking

I don't think my dogs need much, if any, improvement in the looks department and I'm not involved in SL as a rule, so I have no goals with them.

Also no better way to know a dog very well in and out backwards and forwards is to have a dog stay in your home for a spell as you mentioned, videos are nice to see but they dont always tell the whole story.

No, I won't breed off a video. I have only once done a breeding with a dog I didn't spend a lot of time with, and that was my import litter, and I trusted others' opinion on him and wasn't disappointed.

The last stud I used, I took home, took for a bath, groomed him, took him to a coffee shop, took him to my parents' houses, worked him, let my son handle him, took him shopping on slick, shiny floors, exposed him to dogs friendly and not friendly, and just did everything I could think of to test him on in the week I had him.

I've had this other dog since Wed. and have done similar things. I am not suggesting everyone allow their stud dogs to be taken from their property, but when you have someone that trusts you enough to allow it, it's AWESOME for making sure you're making the right match.

I have rarely been able to do that besides using my own stud or once with a close Stud that the stud dog owner trusted me with, but most studs I like are very far away and I,m forced to look at ped, vids, word of mouth, opinions on pro,s I trust,if the stud has proven himself in what he,s produced in the past or what his Sire or Dam has produced over the years, you are very lucky that people trust you to borrow him to know him firsthand extremely well.

I don't mean that I only use local studs- I'm just saying that if I use one far away, I at least will go and meet him in person so long as he's in this country. :)
