Walter Matin says some very interesting things for SL breeders of today.

First : "I must look for a dog with a similar type to Vanta’s, with three quarters of the same blood but with one part being completely different, without Rolf, or in other words, without Canto or Quanto"

Second :"Every third generation you must bring in an absolute "idiot." (Laughs.) Yes, one with very quick blood, a wild one."

So he advises to use breedpartners with 75% the same blood and 25% totally different blood. And to bring in every third generation a tough, strong dog.

Are there any SL breeders of today that have the same vision ?

I was just looking at the pedigree of the only male Wienerau-sieger, Zamb Wienerau.

If you look at the fatherline (Odin Tannenmeise) you see only Canto and Quanto blood and 1 time Mutz Pelztierfarm.

But when you look at the motherline, Ica Wienerau, you see a lot of very strong producers like several times Mutz, Frei Gugge, Bobo Lierberg and also one time Bernd Lierberg.

If this pedigree is correct you can say that W.M was not only looking for a certain type but also wanted a certain degree of working-temperament.

Something that is not the case anymore today.

Looking at this video it is impossible to tell if Zamb was a strong dog.

Is there a working video of Zamb somewhere or are there people who can tell us more of Zamb or his mother Ica ?

When Zamb was young he was sold to Italy and it was said that the reason for the sale was because he could not get the A Stamp for hips in Germany.  WM eventually had the dog back but the hips were rated as Ausland (foreign) and some people were very suspicious of this.

The President wanted to channel the inbreed through two males and Zamb was one of them.  The sire of Zamb is also the sire of the other male.  This has caused a bottleneck in the bloodlines.

With reference to the above - on ZAMB;

I am an ex-Police Dog Handler & a Championship Breed Judge so I know what I am talking about with regard to temperament and charcter.

I knew ZAMB in his own kennel, at shows and at the training field.   I have PERSONALLY seen Zamb working at a place outside of Heidelburg and I can say he bites HARD WITH A FULL MOUTHThe dog was for real - a great dog in everyway

Its OK for folks to sit at home 30 years later and disect a dog they have never seen only heard about.  Deal with your own issues and leave the past in the past.  You can't change anything - CAN YOU?

Walter was a great man and an even greater breeder - lets leave it at that.

Thumbs Up
