Gigante

Susie that change is usually not a problem from fast food to raw. Only from right diet to fast food Regular Smile  Unless going exotic or overdoing it.

Nick how many Distempher shots has the pup had?? 2-3% of your dogs optimal adult weight you can start with the parents and then make your adjusments for the indivdual dog. If you looking at a 90 plus pound dog better to error on the higher side, then slide down for weight adjustment while they are growing.

I have seen a lot of dogs struggling with raw when they were used to kibbles only...

Alot of factors can do that. I have a client that struggled with the formula the pups grew up on. Its my own formula they never struggled while on site. They switched to kibble vet recommended (go figure) the pups got much worse on cold switch. After consulting with them it turned out to be treats that was the issue once the training treats where DC'd the stools and stomach straightened out. Theres alot of factors dogs on kibble for years vs a younger pup etc. Does the raw formula have one item that was offensive, particular protein, source to rich in organ things like that.

Not a perfect rule, but upon further exam I have found its more often then not another factor. But agreed it does happen.

Pano can be extremely painful in large male puppies .. I've seen a few who carried a back leg that you would think was going to fall off and in a couple of months it resolves. Usually Pano will move from leg to leg which is a clear indicator that the problem is Pano. Later their X-rays are normal .. Not much you can do but restrict their exercise a little and wait it out. However if the puppy has injured the muscles ( torn, ripped, or strained ) in the leg that may be harder and more dangerous to deal with. Torn muscles can heal incorrectly reducing range of motion or mobility in the affected leg. If your puppy has been crabbing when he runs or reduces weight on just one affected leg while running by crabbing that can be a "tell" of a more serious problem. Dogs with a long term problem in one leg will compensate by finding a way of running that "feels better" for them.

First off I have not had any luck with his papers, thank you for asking. I do not mind sharing pictures at all the first is from jan 28 and the second is from mar 28.  he has had at least 3 distemper shots I believe, two from the breeder I bought him at 3 months and 1 from my vet there might be more but she has all the proper names on the recipets from the visits.  I am guessing that crabbing is running sideways, if so he does a little but he tends to bunny hop if anything more than a trot.  I do have videos of him waling and trotting but I have no idea how to post those up. I did got to the butcher and started with whole raw chickens, I kinda broke them down a bit and gave him a pound to munch on and he loves it.

as for his weight goes:

03/19/16 87.6#

02/15/16 73#

12/18/15 37#

11/04/15 24.7#

10/19/15 19.5#

Bunny hopping is not good .. I have never seen a puppy doing that .. usually older dogs. Must be hips or Pano or both. Hope for Pano. Better food and light exercise is the best I can offer.

Sounds like pano.

His xrays are not positioned well- the patella is WAY to the outside. I am not worried about his hips or elbows. Move on- that's not the problem, almost guaranteed.

Cut his food back; puppies do not get fat- puppies grow TOO FAST when overfed. People always say "he's not fat" and I always say "No, because he's growing...too fast. Adults get fat; puppies get big." I breed, and sometimes keep pups and my pups are always smaller than their littermates in "normal" homes...sometimes 20lbs. Is that genetics...or is it that I don't feed them as much ;)?

MSM can be good for pano. My youngest male struggled a little bit when my fiance accidentally fed him the wrong food for a month. I switched him back and within 3 days on the right food and MSM, he was dramatically different. I would get him an anti-inflammatory if he is in so much pain that he's not eating. You're correct that muscle atrophy is a danger.

He is not placing any weight on his right rear. I noticed what appears to be ear forms, are you adding any supplements for his ears such as calcium? I would agree with switching him to raw.

Do NOT ever supplement calcium in a large breed puppy!

by nick3981 on 06 April 2016 - 00:04

I only add gelatin otherwise it's chicken feet
